  • Railroad Games?

I was over looking at Gamestop online, saw a new train game coming out, seems it was about Models and constructing a setup of...

I was way dissapointed in Railroads by Sid, and was hoping someone may have heard if another game may be on the horizon worth a flip.

    Thanks in advance

You'll probably enjoy the Railroad Tycoon games if you don't mind picking up oldies.

I don't know of anything new coming up; as far as older stuff goes, I still enjoy a game of Rails Across America every now and then.

Grandpa, you may want to look at Iron Dragons, a computer game that is based on the board game with the same name.

          Rail Baron.
An old board game, that now has an pc version that's capable of MP.

            Rah

I was wondering, is it similiar to SM Railroads, as in you can build and see whats happening?

(Not in the negative as in many items dont work)

            Thanks

For the uninformed (or just me), what are the negatives to SM Railroads? (which items dont work, and perhaps other things)
<Kassiopeia> you don't keep the virgins in your lair at a sodomising distance from your beasts or male prisoners. If you devirginised them yourself, though, that's another story. If they devirginised each other, then, I hope you had that webcam running.

Once you build a train you can't switch tracks so you end up with a freaking nightmare of a bottleneck

That was my biggest gripe and its a BIGGIE

In Rail Baron, you Buy existing railroads and create a network. You make money by completing designated routes. You pay to take railroads, penalites are paid to other players if you have to use their railroads.

Ahh, Rail Baron. I love that game... unfortunately, I haven't found any others in my neck of the woods who share the feeling.

                        Gramps,

Have you ever played one of Mayfair's railroad games? You get to play with crayons to connect dots - this is how you build railroads in the board game version. It is great fun as well, so you may want to play the non-computer version instead.

The computer version is very similar. You build your railroad and get pay by delivering loads. You have 3 load cards with 3 different loads. Once you deliver a load on a card you discard it and draw a new one. Each turn consists of moving (number of mileposts is dependent on your locomotive) and building a max of 20m. Upgrading the locomotive counts as building.

In the beginning of the game you get a number of turns to build the initial railroad a number of 20m "blocks" to match. For example in Empire Builder there are 2 pre-build turns and 40m. For British Rails 3 pre-build turns and 60m. You do not have to use all the money to build tracks. For example you can build 40m and upgrade to a better locomotive. You can - and advisable - to save some money, because random events can strand your train.

So the game is not as detailed as SM's Railroad but more strategic in some ways. The trick is to build a railroad that can be used to deliver multiple loads, instead of needing to build new tracks every time. So a high paying demand may not be as attractive as it looks.

I had the original SM's Railroad Tycoon for my old Amiga, and the sequel on PS1. I always enjoyed the original, but never really got into the second one. Haven't played any other RR sims/games, I'm afraid.
