  • Has anyone played either of the two Civ board games?

The old Avalon-Hill, and the new 'Sid' board game.

I have both, and played the AH one a couple of times years ago. I got the new one last year, but haven't played a full game. It seems a bit flawed, and I'm wondering whether its worth keeping it.

Nope, none. Didn't even know there was a Civ board game.

Do they come with robot AI so you have someone to play with?

I've heard that there are some revised/expanded rules for the newer version of CIV boardgame. I don't remember where exactly I saw it, but I do believe it was a post here in Other Games that mentioned it last year.

I loved the AH one, and have 40 some wins.

I've got the new one. Haven't finished a game of it yet, though there's one in progress on my living room floor. The reason it's on the living room floor is because the board is too big for my desk, the kitchen table, or any other open horizontal space. I get the feeling it would be good if I didn't have to sit on the floor and crawl around every time it was my move.

Seen one once in some toy store. Opened the box had a look inside, semeed rather boring.

Played the Hartland Trefoil one which I assume is pretty similar to the version Avalon Hill published one.

From memory it was a fun multiplayer but little resemblance to the computer game if that;s what you're looking for. We tended to play big strategy games like third reich so Civilization was something occasionally played in an afternoon.

I have 2 versions of the 'new' game.
Bought a 2nd one because there weren't enough 'units' in one box 8)

We have a group of about 12 people who play the game once in a while (6 players per session)
I think that I've played the game about 15 times, mostly taking 8-12 hours. We love it.

We just take a day for it and have a lot of fun, eat together, have a sneak chats among each other. Backstabbing, alliances, etc. etc.
We made a few home rules, but not too much.

I think it's an excellent game, but you need a group of people (poul of people) to play it with.
Oh, and you need patience to play it 8)
The first time playing the game is horrific, btw, because there are many rules and they are hard to learn, thus the first game(s) require a lot of rule studying.
But after you learned the rules, the game flows quite smoothly.

I made an excel sheet with a good overview of the rules and a tech tree for all players.

From the reviews I've read the original rules are a bit broken, and lots of people have developed alternatives - some of which require downloads of new cards and so on - which sounds like a faff.

I was also hoping it wouldn't need a ton of players for a worthwhile game.

The AH one is great, it's a very, very good social game for 3 - 6 players. The rules are simple yet elegant, and players may choose either to help or hinder each other.
