  • Settlers 6

Settlers I and II I loved playing on the Amiga, 3, 4 and 5 I can't remember them, but I think they sucked in comparison to the first two right?

Anyway, I just had a look at 6, and wow, looks really really impressive, they steared away from that cartoonish look and have gone for a very nice realistic and easy to look at feel.

Bugger it, I don't know how to embed video's, no one will tell me!

    great video:

Looks quite tasty, but of course the value of the game is in the gameplay. Hmm, I will have to keep an eye out for this one.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Most people didn't like 3 and 4, while it seems like everybody hated 5
I kinda liked 3 though, mostly played MP... they made some good choices with the races... 4 on the other hand I didn't like. It was kinda like 3, except with boring as hell races

But the cartoonish look is IMHO one of the things that defines a Settlers game
Also this new Settlers game doesn't really look like it has anything to do with The Settlers series... too realistic for a Settlers game IMHO
But I must say that I'm interested in seeing how this turns out, it actually looks like it has potential to become a good game (not like Settlers 5, which didn't look like it had any potential at all)

I'd say that they should rename the game, as it doesn't look like it has anything in common with any of the first 4 Settlers games
This space is empty... or is it?

After watching the video I have a few comments:

1: As soon as he enters the first city he says a very bad word: "Hero"... so far all strategy games that includes heroes has been boring... doesn't sound good
        2. The buildings are built way too fast
        3. But on the positive side, the people in the game are actually "doing something" instead of just "acting" like if what they do is important (unlike Settlers 5)
This space is empty... or is it?

GameTrailers has an automatic embed feature, one of the buttons on the player opens a new window with the embed code built into it. It doesn't work with their HD videos but works fine with their normal trailers.

          Code:

I loved the first two games, but I doubt this will be any good to be honest.

I bought Settlers II TNG a while ago. It's exactly like Settlers II, which was great in it's time 10 years ago, just with up-to-date graphics.

I hoped to love it as much as I loved the original S2, but sadly I can assure you, that it absolutely sucks. The game concept as is may have been revolutionary and great back then, but from a 2007 game I expect a LOT more complexity and polish. From today's perspective S2 is bland and boring. Only our remembrances of long gone good times make it great.

This taught me to not rely just on fond memories when I judge games. Times change.

About S6... We'll see. I had some kind of hatelove for S3. I never played S4 and S5. I have no reason to expect S6 to be better, but I'd love to be convinced otherwise.

Adagio, I agree with you that the buildings are built too fast. I liked watching them get slowly built, it would have been even better if they could do it properly, nail by nail.

But I wonder how much work that would require..

I enjoyed S2 during replays, even as late as last year. Admittedly, I used a "cheat" to accelerate times (that gained me no advantage other than having to sit waiting for less time), but the gameplay itself was still good. Of course, I doubt it would sell well in todays gaming climate.

I enjoyed S3 as well. The campaigns for the different races had quite a lot of variety and challenge. Its a shame they didn't bother supporting it so that people who upgraded to XP could still play. This point was annoying enough to me that I avoided S4 and S5 (not to mention the demo of S4 turned me off the game).

Dunno; after S2TNG had tanked for me I installed S3 on XP and it ran just fine. My brother plays it on XP too.

The game demonstrator in that clip is terribly annoying.

Not only because of his accent but because of his stupid phrases in what seems to be a pitch to big suits and not core gamers.

"We have 3 types of upgrades for each building, which is really easy to understand"

"We have this much attention to detail, look at the beautiful CGI, the water freezing" "look at the small animals!"

"Look, another easy to understand feature".

I liked best of all how he goes on about how all the little people are doing something and are not there for filler space and he goes on to explain:

" everything they do - it's not to create atmospehre, they really have a job there. For instance they're bringing something to the storage, or taking something... or going to the pub to have some beer"

Yes, perfect demonstration of how worker drones are busy doing "actual tasks"

Yeah he was a bit annoying, I guess he was just stumbling on what to say.

Also, I don't recall the previous settlers having any "filler" people. Which version had that?

In Settlers 5 the people just worked, but never actually walked around (which very few exceptions). You never saw goods being hauled or anything

at least not as far as I can remember
