external media can be used on the wii through the photo channel, as well as some games such as Excite Truck using the sd as a custom soundtrack.

Is this a useful way of doing things? No, but I wasn't claiming that it was, I was merely refuting your point.
Fine. I stand corrected. You can view photos in the photo channel on the Wii. You can't play MP3s on the Wii unless you play ExciteTruck.

This isn't about moving goal posts, it's about being practical. The Wii has no media player, it has a photo viewer. Technically photos are media, so congratulations on being semantically correct while ignoring the real point.

    • Let's just make sure this doesn't get out of hand.

It's not over the line yet, but it's getting close.

Post about the topic folks not the posters.

          Actually, according to wikipedia:

If a user inserts an SD card into the console, or sends photos (JPEG) or videos (MJPEG) via email, they can be viewed by means of the Photo Channel. The user can create a slideshow by simply inserting an SD card with photos and, if they want to add music, an MP3 file will work. The Wii will automatically add transitions between the photos and play the music in the background....According to the system's manual, the following file extensions (i.e. formats) are supported: Photos (jpeg/jpg), Movies (mov/avi), and Music (mp3).

JPEG files can be up to 8192x8192 resolution and in baseline format.[3] Video data contained within the .mov or .avi files must be in an OpenDML compliant MotionJPEG use some variant of this format for their videos).
now, I've never used that feature, so I'm not sure how well or even if it works.

          • Motion JPEG...

That's for digital camera videos. No wonder it's in the photo channel.

            • MJPEG support is possibly the most useless feature ever.

I'm shocked (shocked!) to find that Asher overstated his case here as well.

                      ANYWAY...

Canadian NPD is out today, US out tomorrow.

                      • Indeed it was bad month for Wii software in Canada.

Hardware is interesting too. 360 was only 20% ahead of the Wii in unit volume, despite the Halo release. Perhaps the impact will be more dramatic in October.

                        • "only" 20% higher than a much cheaper console in a month where Halo was available all of 5 days? September is historically one of the slowest hardware months around.

The 360's numbers are outstanding, to say the least.

                            • The problem here is I live in the realm of practicality, and you live in the realm of semantics.

The Wii has no media player. The fact that the Photo viewer can play digital camera MJPEGs does not change the argument in any way. You can continue to beat that drum all you want, but you're being facetious and the simple fact that you've stooped to such levels speaks volumes about the strength of your argument.

If you lived in the realm of practicality, you wouldnt be arguing about whether Nikolai's post was on topic or not - PRACTICALLY speaking, he was taking the discussion in a natural direction - we were discussing consoles, and he brought up a problem relating to something he was trying to do with a console. The PRACTICAL thing to do would be to help him, not jump down his throat for being offtopic.

Now from a lawyerly. talmudic, nitpicking POV you were absolutely correct - he WAS offtopic. But if youre going to be like that with people, you can hardly be surprised that folks are going to get lawyerly and nitpicky with you.
