People who buy Fords, Chryslers, etc. are equally dumb.
Come on, if you're going to compare a console to an American made car, it ought to be the 360, with its significant failure rate. The wii is more like a civic-nothing too flashy, but it delivers what is advertised and has a low problem rate.
You would be best to look into what's called the "video game crash" in the early 1980s, BTW...people are irrational and people are stupid. Especially in big groups.
1. My understanding is that those bad games were across all consoles, not limited to one platform.
2. The crash led to "the golden era of PC games" so even then consumers didnt kill off ALL platforms
3. Do you really believe that Nintendos titles are as bad as the stuff associated with the console crash of the 80s?

A dime a dozen maybe, but last I looked demand seems to be high enough to keep the price of a used one at retail price or above. It's not irrational to buy new ones when they're as cheap or cheaper than used.
Just took a look and the price seems to have dropped slightly, but with high shipping & handling charges it looks to me like eBay is still at least $25-50 more than picking it up at a local store.
Thats what I thought. I was being "ironic".

Looks like Nintendo just announced Metroid Prime 3 for August, so looks like my holiday guess was a little late!
Metroid will be an interesting game for Wii. Out of Nintendos many popular franchises (Zelda, Mario, Metroid) it will be the first one to be made for the Wii. This is not Zelda: TP, which changed halfway through from GameCube to Wii. The excuses will not work as to why the controls were so limited, nor as to the graphics. I think a lot of gamers, including myself, are waiting to see if Nintendo can really show that the Wii really does offer some special and unique for 'hardcore' gamers.
So far the Wii has had a lot of excuses to deflect from the level of graphics offered by their games. Wii Sports was just a demo; games were sloppily ported, etc. Nintendo will have their first real opportunity to show us just where the Wii stands when it comes to graphics, as well as audio/music, and of course most importantly, a sincere and REAL transformation of the control scheme. The last photos I saw of Metroid Prime 3 were from about a year ago; at that point in time, the screenshots looked like Metroid Prime 1 and 2. The previews of it were also quite positive.
(From IGN)
As we played a new single-level demo of the Prime 3 at Nintendo's Wii event in New York City, the game's designers told us that we absolutely needed to try the new "expert" control mode. They explained that they hoped it would satisfy our cravings for first-person maneuverability similar to a mouse and keyboard configuration in FPSs on the PC platform.
We started up a new level where heroine Samus Aran explores a vast space station and immediately switched to expert mode. We're happy to report that it simulates the accuracy of PC first-person shooters almost perfectly, and we found ourselves soaring through levels, zipping around corners, pulling quick turns and zapping down enemies with pinpoint precision within seconds. Simply put, Retro has pretty much nailed it - and it makes the wait to 2007 for the game that much more difficult. We're not kidding when we write that Prime 3 feels like a brand new game with this control.
The latest level looks quite a bit more gorgeous than the two missions on display at E3 2006, both of which were also present again in addition to the third today.
Some of the FPA's in-game cinemas are very atmospheric and impressive. In one scene, Samus must go into morphball mode and drop a bomb to propel herself into a nearby airlock. When she triggers the airlock, a cut-scene ensues that shows the character jettisoned into space, where she floats underneath a gigantic ship and eventually grabs onto a protruding lever and pulls herself back in through a gap in the structure. It looks absolutely fabulous
Based on Retros job-well-done with the first Metroid titles for GC, I'm very optimistic that Metroid Prime 3 will be the blockbuster title that will not only give us a great game to play on the Wii, but also reason to expect more to come. For me at least, this game will in many ways be a make-or-break situation - as in, MAKE this game work perfectly on the Wii, or I will BREAK you, (Nintendo).
I agree with your sentiments, Verto. The previews & hype from Nintendo have all promised a lot; if it does come through, I think this will prove the Wii can actually compete with the 360 & PS3 for higher end, "hardcore" games, particularly in the shooter department.
I'm not done with MP2 yet, but once I am MP3 may make it that much harder to not go out and get a Wii.

"Realism isn't important to them - interesting and fun is. They don't care if the Wiimote is realistic - just that you can swing it like a tennis racquet or bowl like a bowling ball.
They don't care if it's realistic, so long as you use the Wiimote in a realistic manner? Think before you type."
actually I think there IS a distinction there. That you can swing the Wiimote like a tennis raquet, even if when the ball bounces, the physics arent perfect, and modified for whether it hits grass or clay, the prevailing wind speed, etc, etc.

Which is why there's little to no depth in the games.

sure, whatever, i wasnt speaking to depth, merely clarifying how the distinction between the "realism" (really immersion, I think) in the use of the Wiimote, versus the fuller (and I guess, more processor intensive) realism you are thinking of.
Im sure lots of people arent looking for that much depth in a tennis game. They want to swing, not analyze surfaces and winds. Lots of people, you know, play REAL tennis and other sports like that. As a matter of fact, they do all kinds of real life activities like that.
I wonder if this is not about hard core vs casual approaches to games, but about different philosophies of life

Is a conservative jew seriously lecturing about sports?
I played Soccer from ages 6 through 14 in leagues, I played baseball for 4 years in California, I played Tennis regularly (lessons and matches) for 3 years. I'm familiar with the concept of playing sports.
I also realize that real Tennis, and games like Virtua Tennis and Top Spin, are hundreds of times more fun and deep than Wii Tennis is.
Have you played Wii Tennis? You don't even move the guys around. All you do is trigger one of three pre-defined swings -- the only "game" part of it is a very weak timing game.
I wonder if this is not about the oblivious observer versus the video game player, but about real stupidity in real life

Ok, enough with Jew this, and Jew that. WTF does it have to do with the topic under discussion.

I thought you enjoyed everything being about teh j00z?
Talk about sending mixed messages.
Can you imagine a guy like this lecturing somebody about the experience of playing sports? Me neither.
