  • Emulator thread

I've seen some references on the forums lately by people playing old classics using emulators. I'm kinda curious as there are several games I never got around to playing, due to not having owned the console at the right time, or already having moved on.

The last game I played using an emulator was Ocarina of Time, and it was a complete pain in the ass, almost spoiling a great game. However, part of the reason was it wasn't easy to emulate N64 games on a PC around 1999.

I'm guessing things will have improved since then. Post your experiences though and let's find out. Best keep it to experiences rather than resources online as that might get me into trouble.

So much is lost without playing with a proper controller, though.

You can get decent controllers for the PC though - Logitech make some nice ones.

Even one that suitably replaces the N64 controller? Cool.

I'm using Xbox 360 wireless controllers. They work on PCs with a $20 receiver. Apparently, they're better than the Logitech ones since they use XInput, which is set to replace DirectInput.

Mine worked 'out of the box', so to speak. What receiver did you have to buy?

EDIT: I had hooked up the USB controller, not wireless.

I have a logitech rumblepad 2, which is shaped like a ps2 controller, but is more substantive and feels much better in my hands. I haven't played n64 games, but I've played ps1 games and older gens.

I was planning to get one of those for my emulator fix actually.

I'm also intrigued about the X-Box 360 controller idea though. More info please LS.

I had an NES and SNES emulator. The keyboard is just terrible, way to distracting. Using the 360 controller was better, but sitting in front of a computer just doesn't cut it. I'm thinking about buying a Classic Controller and downloading a couple games of the Virtual Console..just need to hit Outlands first

Playing N64 games with the 360 controller is much better than the keyboard but slightly weird because you can't mape the keys directly. The second analog stick isn't precise enough to use to replace the c buttons, and the analog triggers are considered on the same axis, so you can't hit L and R simultaneously if you map them there.

This is particularly problematic for Zelda, but for some games it doesn't really matter (Mario 64, Episode 1 Racer to name a couple).
