  • Researchers list most important games...

A list of the most important computer games (compiled by researchers at Stanford). Here it goes:

    1. Spacewar (1962)
    2. Star Raiders (1979)
    3. Zork (1980)
    4. Tetris (1985)
    5. Sim City (1989)
    6. Super Mario Bros III (1990)
    7. Civilization I och II (1991, 1996)
    8. Doom (1993)
    9. Warcraft (1994)
    10. Sensible World of Soccer (1994)

Found the list at a swedish business site...

A bit strange that Super Mario Bros III is included (and not the first game in the series), no?

    Edit: I added 1996 for Civ 2...

A New York Times piece on the list:

Edit: Well, the man behind the list is at Stanford...

Not a bad list, but not having SMB is strange, as is the lack of early text based RPGs.

I believe that SMB III may have been the best-selling game of all time.

And Tetris is clearly commie propaganda.

It's not. Ironically enough SMB is!

I think that may have depended on whether or not you count to copy bundled with the NES.

Zork is on the list, but then that really wasn't a RPG either. I don't recall text based RPGs, to be honest. I had big gaps in my computer ownership in those days.

Yeah I wasn't thinking of Zork, something like Adventure or Rogue. Before my time too!

The first three Warcraft games represent the introduction of real-time strategy overlaid on a narrative

                        Dune?

I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

                          Dis,

According to a collegue of mine, it is the first computer game ever created...

My guess is that it was played on a 5 ton mainframe by five men in white lab coats...

                            Mentioning Warcraft while ignoring Dune
This space is empty... or is it?

                              You guys mean Dune 2.

It is kind of debatable which game to put on lists like this. Dune 2 got in first and influenced the later games, but Warcraft captured the imagination of gamers everywhere and sold far more copies. Along with C&C they popularised the genre.

I'm ok with either Dune 2 or Warcraft - at least it didn't go to C&C.
