I don't know if it is horror, but Indigo Prophecy was pretty good (beggining at least).

GENERATION 35: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment.
I just finished Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi. It's pretty good. At heart it's your basic "collect the keys, explore the castle" Gothic horror game, but it has excellent music accompaniment for spookiness, and it has some interesting new ideas on weapons.
There is also a time limit element, and each time limit you fail will make the end boss that much more powerful. It is conceivable that you could get up to him without ever standing a hope of beating him.
The ending is also interesting and unusual for a video game.
Oh, and another shout out to Clive Barker's Undying. Excellent game, with a well thought out magic system, and a good selection of weapons, both supernatural and mundane.
Finally, although it's not true horror gaming, the Thief stealth games are wonderfully atmospheric too, with a strong sense of being outgunned at all times. The first is the best, in my opinion, and I have only seen a handful of games that match this one for stealth gameplay and plot continuity. This game, possibly more than any other, paved the way for dramatic plot development seen later in System Shock 2, Deus Ex, and ultimately Bioshock.
"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.
(slaps head!)
Off course.....my god to not yet mention this is a crime!
UFO - Enemy Unknown(UK/Europe title) or Xcom for the USA. Not only is this probably one of the best strat games of all time, but it is incredibly tense during the mission phases.
You'll just hate it when having to turn around a corner on a dark night to find some alien horror waiting to suck your soldiers brain out! And the whole 'Alien story' is quite creepy and fun to uncover.
Not meant to be horror but can be pretty heart pounding - you try to keep your original crew alive after naming them after people you care about!
*snip*
Can I do that? It is an very old/not sold anymore game?
oops! sorry Solver.....yeah "abandonware" is not something i'm that comfortable with....but Xcom is just soooo good, and so hard to find.
I got my last copy when on holiday in Cyprus, about 10years after it had dissapeared from stores in the uk! It was a cool double pack with the Terror from the Deep game and two huge game guides - a good find
Space Hulk, an old Amiga+PC game was pretty scary(and hard as nails):
Space Hulk is a real-time conversion of the original board game by Games Workshop set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Players control a squad of Space Marines in an maze allowing 90 degree turns which they may view through multiple first person...
And one of the early 'Aliens' games(I played on the C64) was quite tense, and the red monochrome graphics added to the tension I think?:
