  • Recommend some good horror games

I'm elbow-deep in the Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (PC), and pretty damn happy. It's no Half-Life, but it has a terrific atmosphere, and it's good to see Lovecraft adapted faithfully. It's also awakened a desire to play some good horror games. I obtained a copy of System Shock 2, and plan on playing it soon (probably with one of the available graphics mods).

I also have an XBox, but anything that requires aiming I prefer to play on my PC (I've spent so many years using a mouse and keyboard it's difficult aim with my thumb.) Still, I'm open to anything. So, please recommend some good and scary games (PC or XBox only).

'Black Mirror' a point+click adventure is more gothic in feel than horror - but i quite liked it. If you hate adventure games it might not be so good - although you can pick up a load of really good 'horror' type games if you look around and dont mind old text based/point+click games.

An Fps game that i found pretty tense(as with System Shock) was Aliens vs Predator:

On planet LV1201, ancient alien ruins have been discovered. The Weyland-Yutani corporation sets up a research facility in the area, to study and unlock the secrets of the excavation. When xenomorphic (alien) eggs are found, Dr. Eisenberg is assigned...

There was just something nasty about knowing there might be a alien rushing across the ceiling towards you in the gloom.

But it has a lot of downsides: The ending was almost as bad as Dreamfall, I doubt any game can have a worse ending than that, but Black Mirror was close
And the voice "acting" is BAD, you could hear they were just reading up from a paper, and you could hear when they reached the end of the line (your main characters voice-acting was the worst)

Alien versus Predator 2 probably has more points where you jump than any other game, but it's not exactly subtle. It is however better at it than more recent "horror" efforts such as Doom3.

SS2 (already mentioned) has the best atmostphere, and even though scares are rare you should be scared the whole time.

There's a decent little free one called the white chamber that you might have some fun with if you can ignore the horrible walking animation of the main character. It should manage to creep you out with the ambience and the... general instability of your environment.

Another free one: Penumbra. It's a tech demo right now.

I really enjoyed the original Resident Evil although it may have dated a bit now.

What about Silent Hill ? Not played the game but seen the film which I accept isn't the best recommendation ever.

As always, everything depends on what actually scares you.

Doom3 and Silent Hill would be good picks. The entire Silent Hill series is created with being scary in mind, and the first one should still feel scary today despite the ancient graphics. However, I think that the actual gameplay of SH1 isn't very fun - for gameplay, the newer SH games are probably better.

I played a bit of one of the Silent Hill games (IIRC it was SH3), but what scared me the most about the game was the controls, fighting with those controls was a nightmare

You may also try picking up Thief: Deadly Shadows. The game as a whole isn't scary, but the mission Robbing the Cradle is the single scariest level ever made for a video game, at least in my opinion.

I tried Silent Hill on the xbox and didn't enjoy it. I think zombies are lame. However, I tried Fatal frame and it was pretty good.

Vampire:Masquerade has some good moments in it. The haunted hotel, the house on the hill.

Other areas like the sewers take it a bit too much into Doom territory for me but still had me nervously creeping around.
