  • So I heard a rumour...

... about a remake of the orginal and best; UfO Enemy unknown, aka X-Com.

A friend told me on the tram the other day. As I'm not keeping up with the gaming industry nowadays, I wondered if anyone had some juicy information about that?

    I wanna blast some sectoids!

Aside from Aftermath and Aftershock (both released), I haven't heard anything. I have played Aftermath and it is a good game, although not identical in gameplay to XCom. There are bases, but you just choose it to be a research base, engineering base, etc and a day later it is. No money management or base management. The combat is very similar though (where it gets the "spiritual sucessor" title from).
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

Yeah, yeah, I've heard about those. But I'm talking about the real thing - just updated. Like they did with Pirates!

        Unlikely. Atari own the rights.

I think there are one or two mod projects that aim to make something similar to X-Com. I suppose it's theoretically possible. I did a nostalgia thing a few months ago, and played the Privateer Remake done in the open source Vega Strike engine. It was decent, and sure brought back memories.

Download UFO2000 for free. UFO2000 is a turn based tactical squad simulation game with multiplayer support. It is heavily inspired by the famous X-COM: UFO Defense game and can load graphics resources and maps from it providing X-COM look and feel with multiplayer experience.

I heard about a game that is remarkably similar (one might even say identical) to X-Com being made by some Eastern European development group, but I've completely gone and forgotten the name. It was coming along nicely, though, for whatever that's worth...
I make movies. Come check 'em out.

I haven't heard anything. As far as I know Skanky is right about the rights, and they will just be sat on forever.

Or until Atari gets bought out by another gaming company. One can hope.

It certainly would open up some possibilities.

So, you should never trust what you hear on the tram - even when it's not coming from a drunken finn...

Could it be Laser Squad Nemesis ?

In the current dev market it would be considered 'too risky' for PC or console release, without a fundemental(and probably disasterous) re-design.
It might(and has!) get 'type' versions on handhelds though:

Metacritic aggregates music, game, tv, and movie reviews from the leading critics. Only Metacritic.com uses METASCORES, which let you know at a glance how each item was reviewed.

That Laser Squad Nemesis looks good Tuberski - thanks for that
