  • PC snob checks out Xbox 360

so im at the local micocenter, and theyve got the tutorial for Battle for Middle Earth (2?) up on the 360. Now im a Tolkien geek of sorts, so I try it.

Its very pretty of course. But the controls (and bear in mind ive maybe used a console control for like 10 minutes in my entire life) seemed awkward, and the gameplay was nothing special.

All in all Id just as soon go back to Age of Kings (though I wont mind getting a PC RTS with better graphics). Am I missing something?

Console controls can take a bit of getting used to, especially if, like you said, you never really used one. I mean going from keyboard and mouse to all the various game pad combos is a bit tricky.

I personally love console games along with pc games.
Although with almost any new console game, getting used to the button combos and what they do takes a while.

One added bonus of consoles is being able to play on a huge tv. Bigger than any monitor you could resonably afford.

    eh..

Also, some games aren't ported to PC, so it isn't so much a pc vs console thing.

Missing out on a great game because of a PC bias is unfortunate. And those that are ported don't always shine as well as the console version.

      edit: and vice versa

Given your tastes, I can't really see any value in a console.

what great games are we talking about? I haven't seen any great console games that weren't ported to a PC.

Well, aside from alot of action games, the Metal Gear Solid series is one that took a couple of years to port and the sequel was a port of a port. The Final Fantasy series is another.

Maybe it's just me, but alot of console to pc ports are afterthoughts that pale in comparison to the console version. Tomb Raider comes to mind. I'm just saying that even if you get a pc port, it is a toss up whether it will be the same or an "edition" of some sort...

I've played alot of them, and it is understandable that a pc player who has no reference to the console version may think he is getting the console game, but my experience is contrary.

            that's all.

Besides, gaming should be about a great game, not pc vs console.

At least I have always viewed it that way. As I say , I prefer my pc everyday. I fire it up and play pc games every single day, something I can't say about my PS2. Of course that may be due to having it on because of other uses.

But, I call' em as I see 'em when it comes to games, and consoles shouldn't be ignored.

One last thought, I love that games are ported over to pc and vice versa, what steams me is when the xbox releases an "exclusive" game or nintendo or sony does the same thing.

Needing 3 consoles to play different games. In this regard, the universal nature of the pc wins hands down.

Vice City was way better on the PC than the PS2 version.

Guess it's easier and better that way.

Step 1. Make game for console.
Step 2. Port, enhance and add additional features for PC version.

Cost effective and good for both machines.

I am continuously stumped about the argument that consoles are good because you don't need to upgrade your PC to meet system requirements. It's all fair, okay, but for the price of a console, I could upgrade my PC anyway if needed...

You could update your PC maybe once.

For the cost of a Gamecube how much could you really do? And my Gamecube has given me far more enjoyment than $200 more on a graphics card could.
