Put your money in a high interest money market and wait Gramps. With vista nigh upon us, DirectX10 coming soon and a new gen of vid cards to support DX10, it is absolutely the wrong time to be buying a new machine.

          When is DirectX10 due?

          How about the Video Cards?

Vista is an upgrade anyway for new XP Purchases?

          Thanks

Microsoft has stated that the scheduled release dates are currently November 30, 2006 for volume license customers and worldwide availability on January 30, 2007.[1]

            Ok
            That solves that

            first of year for Vista

Now about the Graphics Card issue

Oh and Thanks for the tip

Well if you're going to wait for Vista you want a DirectX 10 card otherwise the waiting would be kind of pointless.

Currently the only dx10 cards are the nvidia 8800 cards that costs around $500. No idea when the mainstream versions will be launched.

Yeah, Nacht is right, there is a DX10 (would that be DX X? DX^2?) available and we will likely see at least one more rev before Vista and DX 10 full release.

However, those cards will have the DX10 pre-release spec as their target. (Current release is from Nov 11 and is available as part of the Vista beta build 5238). While the features probably won't change much, it is probably better to wait for the video cards that are released after the full release of DX 10 anyway.

Now the fly in the ointment is that there is no official release date for DX10. There is much speculation that there will not even be a seperate release for 10.0a, but it will only be available on the Vista CD/DVD.

Bottom-line, you are probably looking at a mid-to-late February 2007 timeframe.

Personally, I will be waiting until the first big Vista patch, DX10b release and the next gen of video cards after the initial release. So, I do not anticipate building a new rig until April/May.

Which is why I suggested putting your cash into a high-yield money market. $3000 at 4% for six months will net you $3122. Not a big increase, but enough to pay 60% of the sales tax! Or to upgrade to a bigger power supply. Or to invest in a quieter cooling solution.

DirectX 10 will, indeed, only be available for Vista. There are huge fundamental changes in it that aren't compatible with XP.

There will be a stopgap release of DirectX 9 for XP using new shadermodels (SM 4.0) called DirectX 9.0L, though.
