I've heard from numerous people that the game is amazing.

I have it. It is amazing, those reviews aren't lying. Personally, I'm not generally a big fan of real-time strategy games. I'm more into turn based strategy, as most RTS games become a game of click-fast rather than skill. However, CoH has so much detail and required tactics in it (plus you can pause it) that it seems more like a squad level tactical combat game than RTS to me. There are some RTS elements still in it, but not a lot, and not even always.

Example: the typical game will start you with a HQ, which can only build engineers. Engineers build all other base structures. Barracks can build rifle squads and recon jeeps. Support weapon facilities can build mortar teams, HMG teams and snipers. Motor pools build M8 Greyhound armored scout cards, M3 halftracks, and 57mm AT gun teams. Tank depots build M4 Shermans and the Crocodile (flamethrower equipped CEV) as well as the M10 tank destroyer. There are three resources in the game: manpower, munitions and fuel. Manpower comes naturally, the amount depending on the map. Munitions and fuel you can by controlling sectors of the map. And that's about all the RTS stuff in the game.

Tanks are devastating against infantry in the open, but many infantry have antitank weaponry, so you can't afford to run them without infantry support. Infantry are vulnerable to artillery and machinegun fire, and tend to get pinned if they get caught in the open. You do NOT want to charge straight in against a bunker or MG nest.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

                It´s a great WW2 RTS.

Bought it today. Awesome. I had a few HOLY CRAP moments.
Indeed, the Normandy landing in the first mission was one of those moments for me, I almost felt sorry for the poor US commander in the intro and the troops getting slaughtered by the machine guns that I had to get to the frontlines

Well if you want to let your irrational dislike get in the way of enjoying a (potentially) good game that's your choice.

Come on, in RTS WW2 isn't even an overdone setting.

Ok - so I'm coming really late to this game. I got it free with the video card I bought for the new system I built. Didn't even realize it was included until the discs fell out of the box. Normally I wouldn't have touched this title because it's an RTS and I'm an old fart.

So I load the game and think "I wonder if there are any patches I should get?" Uh, yeah - like THREE GIGABYTES worth! Holy crap! Makes me harken back to the days when I thought X-Com was out of hand because of the five floppy discs needed.

Anyway, so I patched up the game and played the first few tutorials. Looks like it's going to be a blast; reminds of long summer days of youth playing "Last Man in the Army" and stuff like that with my friends.

Any tips for a CoH newb? Anyone even playing or has played?

there were 3 gig up updates because it was downloading content from the expansion so you can play against owners of the expansion online. That was relic being nice rather than just being a pain in the ass

                          multiplayer is great.

cover is important, pay attention to where your troops are standing and try to move them into cover if youre having a fire fight. cover is directional so you will still take damage if you have the green cover shield if the enemy is firing on you from the same side of the cover.
                          Safer worlds through superior firepower

A few weeks ago I decided to install the game (which I, as mentioned, also got free with my graphics card). I played through the tutorial and halfway through the first level, then I fell asleep. It was pretty boring

If it had a more interesting setting I wouldn't hate it that much, but it still wouldn't make it interesting

If might have given it a second try if there wasn't better games to play

The multiplayer is why it's a great game. Relic online is okay, but getting a friend or two to play with is obviously optimal. It's like having real time command control over a level in Call of Duty, which is just awesome.

Civilization 4 looks like ass and has horrendously slow multiplayer, so it's hard to compare the two.
