  • Game with cash cards...

Project Entropia allows you to spend money earned in a MMORPG in real life shops, using a card. Full story at BBC:

BBC, News, BBC News, news online, world, uk, international, foreign, british, online, service

Earning money, real money, by playing MMORPGs is not new (check out, for example, the first of May issue of BusinessWeek or Edward Castronova's home page), but I've never heard of this before... Pretty cool!

This is interesting, but I'm still not sold on how this is going to work in practice.

The cards would have to be mailed. To do otherwise the users of the service would have to have some sort of card reader hardware, which while expensive would also open the gaming company up to some real problems with hacking.

I've seen visa debit cards given out as gifts before. Not a new tech, but the first time I've seen it used in connection with a role playing game.

The article in BusinessWeek was about people making a living in Second Life. Among them: a real estate agent, a game developer (the game he created, Tringo, can be played inside the game, but will soon appear on Nintendo's GameBoy Advance and real-world cell phones), a guy in Norwich who came up with "couples animations" so that avatars can dance or cuddle.

The female real estate agent's Second Life assets are worth more than $250 000 (those are real dollars); the Norwich stay-at-home dad sells thousands of his animations a week (yielding about $ 90 000 a year) and hopes to pay off his mortgage soon...

I'm seriously thinking about changing career (not that I have much of one currently... ) Play games and make a living out of it?! Where do I sign up?

Contrary to myself, my wife is truly a creative person... Maybe if I can get her a little more into computer games... The things she could come up with and create in virtual worlds...

I have a former co-worker who made ~$500 a week creating skins for people in ... I forget which game.
<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.
