  • Fallout or Fallout 2 - which should I get?

Yeah, somehow these managed to slip past me back in the day. I'm looking for older rpgs to play on my mediocre laptop, and I need something to play when I eventually complete Planescape: Torment. Now I know some people are going to say "just get them both." My response: I know from experience that I'll only play one, since I don't spend huge amounts of time playing rpgs on my laptop.

So, should I go with the first game, or are there sufficient improvements in the sequel to warrant bypassing the original? (I debated getting Wasteland, but decided I didn't want to go quite that old.)

I find it hard to distinguish between the two games except in one critical way - the length.

For my attention span, Fallout 1 was just right. It entertained me all the way to the end.

Fallout 2 though I have never finished. I always make it about 3/4 of the way in, and I just lose motivation.

So if you want a game that will last you longer, go for Fallout 2. (I would just get them both though, because last time I saw them for sale, they were bundled together.)

I'd definatly play Fallout 1 first. There are some interface updates to Fallout 2 to but not much else. They are both good titles and I have played them to death, still have the CDs for both of them and usually play through them once a year if the desire strikes.

Fallout 1 is shorter. The story is more interesting and some of what you do in FO1 is referenced in FO2.

They had both in my local bargain bin for, like, 25$. And you know what? I didn't buy them.

          $25 for both isn't exactly a bargain.

Fallout 2 had far less immersion and atmosphere. The biggest improvement in the sequel was the ability to trade bottle caps faster.

It means they are paying you to take it away, in fact.

Play Fallout 1 first. It will prime you for the sequel. It's also a really fun game.

And how exactly were you going to get Wastelands to work? It's like Amiga.

I agree with the others, you should get both.

Fallout 2 though I have never finished. I always make it about 3/4 of the way in, and I just lose motivation.
Well that's a damn fine coincidance. Although I think I got further into FO2.

The epilogue of FO1 changed depending on what you did during the adventure hich made playing more than once interesting to see what haoppened differently.

DOS version available at www.abandonia.com. Lots of great "old school" games there.

I got both last summer in a nice package. Shipped them in from Australia as a matter of fact, so it wasn't exactly a bargain... Doesn't matter!

Yeah, why does this have to be a choice? Get both, like Spiky said
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
