  • Mass Effect Preview (Bioware's new game)

Due out later this year, Mass Effect is BioWare's futuristic RPG that's exclusive to the 360. The game takes players to the 23rd century on a galactic adventure. The narrative behind it spans across much more than just this one game, as this is merely the first offering in an eventual trilogy of games. Amazingly enough, the story's development won't stop between the releases. Those with an online setup can continuously watch the episodic adventure progress through systematic updates.

The adventure takes place in the distant future, where technology is more advanced and the human race has been blessed with a method of traveling deep into the galaxy. In doing so, humanity meets new races of alien robotic life. Although this may seem like a joyous discovery for mankind, the human desire for absolute power threatens to disrupt relations between humans and the aliens.

Mass Effect's story unravels similar to most RPGs, but the game is not necessarily played like a typical RPG. Those who hate constantly running into random enemies, waiting for a combat mode to load, and taking turns with the enemy smacking each other, will thankfully not have to deal with any of that nonsense here. Play and fighting work similarly to Knights of the Old Republic's action adventure style. All battles transpire in real time; so aiming in combat is now more vital, as fighting is no longer a back-and-forth match.

Players control a trio of characters as they explore the depths of the universe. There are two components to exploration: piloting a spaceship, and uncovering each discovered world by foot. Each planet looks distinct, and the dust and detritus from each environment actually stick to the characters.

Characters can utilize both weapons and supernatural powers. Character abilities and skills will increase as the story develops, and any such improvements can be imported into the two future installments in the series. And, as we said earlier, story updates and extras will purportedly be provided for online players.

In any role-playing game, an intricately laced story is normally the focal point. The developers are aiming for more realistic looking interactions between characters through nicely crafted cutscenes. During dialogue, characters converse with subtle mannerisms and common hand and body motions. Also, BioWare has created a narrative that enables gamers to choose multiple responses and actions. Players can opt to dutifully conquer locations with a kind heart and honorable intentions, or a more sinister approach can be taken. As the story progresses, characters can change in appearance and also become more powerful.

Those intrigued with role-playing games should probably keep an eye on Mass Effect. The gameplay is similar to Knights of the Old Republic, and players will have their hands full fighting extraterrestrials throughout the missions.
    Very promising.

Not on PC? Too bad, they apparently don't want my money.

      Same here.

      EDIT: Looks interesting, though!

This looks interesting. Probably not interesting enough to buy an X-Box though.

This is an FPS, right? Why would anyone make an FPS game, but not release it on a PC?

            Indeed.

I wonder how much longer "only on x-box 360" will hang around for ... I understand "only on PSx" or "only on Nintendo x" as those are easy to develop for consoles that aren't particularly similar to the PC, but the X-Box uses a lot of the PC's APIs. Once MSoft stops giving monetary rewards to developers for 'only on xbox' I can't see games being released on xbox and not pc unless they're inappropriate for the PC platform ...

I wonder how hard it would be to write an x-box (regular, or 360) emulator on the PC? Not necessarily one that would run smoothly on current hardware, just ... conceptually run.

No, it's an RPG. Bioware makes RPGs that are sort of FPSish, but still RPG by most definition. Think KoTOR or Jade Empire.

I'm assuming MSoft is paying them for this to be exclusive, at least for now. Hopefully like Halo it'll come out later on, on the PC.

Ok, don't know those games. I just read this:

All battles transpire in real time; so aiming in combat is now more vital, as fighting is no longer a back-and-forth match.

They mention that aiming is more important, which makes me think of FPS games

And while we're on the subject of aiming, then it still makes no sense to have it for consoles, as joypads are useless for aiming

You've never heard of Knights of the old republic (KOTOR)?

That's because you suck My aim is pretty good, thank you very much

Nope, whenever I see a game title with knights I stop reading

Now compare your aiming on a console to aiming on a PC. I seriously doubt that even the best "aim'er" on consoles, could ever beat a good "aim'er" using mouse + keyboard, without using auto-aim

Its a good rule of thumb, I admit. Knights and knight-related games tend to suck monkey balls. OTOH, a Knights in white satin game could be interesting That said, KOTOR was a good game. (Remember, Bioware are the guys behind Baldur's Gate 1 and 2)

The mouse is obviously more precise, yes. But when you said that gamepads were useless for aiming I said to myself: you're one of those are you? Those newbs who can't shoot straight with a gamepad?

I would have no idea, I've never played an FPS game on a console. The closest thing I've tried was GTA:SA, but that game has auto-aim, and the little time I spent playing the game on the console was spent driving around, discovering the area
