Urban Ranger, I've changed the OP to use the quote command. The ideas I mentioned could all be part of optional gameplay so you could choose whether or not to have an unknown map.

Building a railway was (still is) an enormous undertaking, and require lots of information, such as an estimate of how much money you could make, layout of the land, various industries, where the cities/towns are, etc. People are not going to build a railway in some unknown area.(\__/) 07/07/1937 - Never forget

All you have to do is discover a second city (you probably start at one) and then you can start building. Decisions would be made whether to spend more time exploring to find a possibly better economic route with another city or start building with what you have. Risky but could be exciting.Avoid COLONY RUSH on Galactic Civlizations II (both DL & DA) with my Slow Start Mod.

I would prefer SMAC 2 also. I just can't get excited about trains, and that screenshot looks no better than zoomed in Civ IV.
I am excited about the new city based game Firaxis is working on called CivCity.Voluntary Human Extinction Movement http://www.vhemt.org/

I see the above blurb talks about having a real timetable. It would be good to have the option to run the game in REAL real-time - that is, we see the daily operations and each actual trip the trains make - not just something that generally represents the route over a few months.

Didn't A Train have this option? I'm going back a bit here though so my memory is shaky.
As UR says the ability to develop your own towns would be great. Turn the sleeply hamlet into an industrial centre or tourist centre etc. Maybe something similar to Zoning in SimCity and special buildings could be included.
