It's the external IP you need, and you should know it.

You can use a number of websites like:

This is particularly useful if you have a dynamic IP.

ipconfig and that website give differing results for you?

            Okay, a few updates.

I have gotten XvT to run and found a partner (in Canada, not bad, eh?) to play against.

Yes, we do have to connect using IP but it's all good. The game is a little choppy though.

I also have found a copy of TIE CD and I have inherited an old Win98 laptop. The game runs fine on the laptop, which also accepts my USB joystick.

In other words, don't expect to see me out of the house again for a few months.

Nice. It was (is) a very good game. It would be great if an updated version were to be released.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

If you have an original CD copy of TIE Fighter, AND you have X-Wing Alliance, there is a project to update the game using the XWA engine. It's at tftc.gaylenol.com and it's called the TIE Fighter Total Conversion.

So far they only have the first six battles converted, but they have plans to do the entire 13, culminating in the famous Zaarin/Thrawn conflict.

A worthy goal, but some people are just crazy.

Keeping great games playable on modern systems is not what I would call crazy. A lot of effort, sure, but a rational decision.

If you have a router... yes.

Correction, if you have a router that uses NAT or some other method of allowing multiple computers to use one IP. Some routers route individual IPs to individual computers, through one net connection.

But yes, most home routers give all computers on their network 192.168.x.x addresses, which is a 'local' address. They then route network traffic to the various computers on the network. ipconfig will show 192.168.x.x based on your computer's connection to the router, while the router itself will posess the external (and thus relevant) IP address. www.whatismyip.com et al will show that relevant external IP address.

Well as long as it's other gamers' efforts then why not.
