I have a grand total of 2 starforce "protected" games and I've just found out that one of them has hosed my dvd burner. Gah.
Additionally, one of the two games wouldn't even work until I'd uninstalled the blasted thing (starforce) and replaced the exe with a hacked no-cd exe.
It's a sad day when one has to rely on one lot of pirates to remove the "copy protection" imposed by another lot of pirates to get something, legitimately purchased, to work ...Comment

I don't have any starforce protected games, what does it do?
ah I see now, very not good. luckily the games I have either do a cd key, or serial # independent of the cd that is used for multiplayer/updating,etc.Last edited by Whoha; March 24, 2006, 01:27.Comment

It's a terrible shame that the PC-Gaming industry has come to such sorry states.
Not only will I boycott starforce but I also plan on boycotting PC-games in general. The entire industry needs to be reset and rebooted (pun intended).

So if a really great game comes out on the PC you wont buy it because of bad behaviour by one company, a company probably completed unrelated to the game you are interested in.

Not when there are so many great games to be played anyway. Every year I have to pass on probably a dozen or more games just due to lack of time (and money), so making a little statement about copy protection is as good a tie breaker as any.

I do own a game with starforce (X3: The Reunion). While the game looked ok, my vid card wasn't up to the job and the mouse lag made it unplayable.
GalCiv2 wasn't on high on my tobuy list, it is now.There's no game in The Sims. It's not a game. It's like watching a tank of goldfishes and feed them occasionally. - Urban RangerComment

If more people took action, or in this case no action, than maybe vendors wouldn't try to pass garbage onto us like this. Meaning relying on the paying customer to be a beta tester.signature not visible until patch comes out.Comment

So... let me get this straight...
This Starforce guy... he posted the link to download the game on the forums because of revenge because they decided not to use the Starforce copy protection on GalCiv2?
Am I understanding this correctly?
If so... seems childish... and really stupid because not only do you burn that bridge, but you pretty much screw up your reputation and guarantee that nobody will want to use your copy protection with a game if that kind of thing is going to happen.
Plus, it was stupid because it's not going to hurt their sales at all. People who are going to buy the game are already going to buy it... not many people reading those forums are probably unaware of means to "acquire" games like GalCiv2 anyways. I don't see what that guy was trying to accomplish.

Several websites are reporting that Ubisoft employees have confirmed StarForce DRM will not show up in upcoming Ubisoft titles. Galaad from CelestialHeavens.com (a Heroes of Might and Magic Fansite) claims Ubisoft and Nival are dropping StarForce DRM completely.
The original forum thread (English) contains a Ubisoft employee claiming "We have decided that the anti-copy protection used on the future Ubisoft games won't be the StarForce software" (translated French to English). There was no mention of what DRM would replace StarForce, though comments from other employees among the Ubi forums indicate that no future Ubisoft titles will be DRM-free.
StarForce, the DRM software for several high profile PC games, has been in the news a few times over the last several months. Three months ago, the company drew some attention for a bet made with its users. Comments made by some of the StarForce employees later helped skyrocket the sales of a competing product, and then to round things off Ubisoft sued StarForce a few weeks ago anyway.
