  • Fallout and WinXP

I just got Fallout 1 today, after a using the guide on "No Mutants Allowed" I got it installed. The game runs (I can get into the game), but as some random point very early (max 5 minutes, but often just a few seconds after starting the game), the screen goes black, except in the position where the mouse pointer is. With the mouse I can then "clean" the screen, so more of the game becomes visible, but after like 5 sec, everything becomes black again

Has anyone made it work in WinXP?
This space is empty... or is it?

I've done a search that hasn't come up with much, but I would try:

Lowering graphic acceleration and seeing if that made a difference

    If not, then trying dosbox.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

      Yes.

I distinctly recall someone telling me recently that there was no need for DosBox as WinXP's system was flawless.

I made Fallout II work with XP, and I'm pretty sure that they're the same engine and everything. I didn't have to do anything special at all to get it working either.
        John Brown did nothing wrong.

Fallout II worked 'out of the box' for me too, and the engine is the same
I have managed to make it work a bit better... the black screen annoyance still happens, but not that often as before. I hope I'll manage to find a way to make it work all the time

Now I finally found out why the screen went black all the time earlier, it was because I had winamp running. Closing winamp makes it work better (still not perfect, but playable)

I had Fallout installed on my comp before I reformatted my drive. I don't recall many problems with it. Though I mainly played fallout 2.
