  • Call Of Duty: Still Awesome

Firstly, I have to say that I love this game. It's awesome. Having only played the original, allow to me rant about it now:
Overall--AWESOME. There is nothing better than throwing a grenade and hearing those three scripted enemy reactions (incidentally, is "shutzvigen" (or whatever) another word for grenade in German?). It's awesome. AWESOME. The game would get 100% just for this segment, but things get more awesome.
The Russian missions. Hearing Nazi propaganda, running past machine gun nests with nothing but 5 rounds of ammo and no rifle, it's all amazing. The fact that you -die- the first 3 or 4 times you do that first Russian mission just makes it all the more realistic.
As an aside, the best shout by the "fashist invaders", as the badly accented Russians say in English, is "Englander!"
The smarminess of the Nazi propaganda speakers is just amazing. Full marks for amazingness.
I am unhappy with the Brits. Far too stereotypically played out. Funny moustaches everywhere. Still, they feature prominently, unlike in a few war movies one could name, so I'm happy.
Yeah, and the shooting parts are fun too.

Does anyone know of translations of the German spoken in the game (most of the time it's obvious, but just from curiousity, I want to know what's said in the Dam mission for example)?
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

    eh

    the game is okay

    no replay value

the best thing going for it was the Revolt mod

but hardly anyone plays it anymore... at least the last time I checked

I'd give it an 80 out of 100

it's a pretty game, especially for when it was released... good sound, etc... they seemed to want the environment to look, feel, and sound a certain way... but the game was very linear, the maps weren't very open, and nothing about the gameplay was special

multiplayer was not very fun... and the interface for finding servers was horrible

again... the best part about this game was the Revolt mod

as for WW2 FPS's... Day of Defeat Source and Battlefield 1942 are more fun

after you beat the CoD singleplayer missions, there's no reason to keep the game on your hard drive... there is just no replay value whatsoever.

the thing I care about when judging FPS's are multiplayer (LAN and internet), overall gameplay fun, replay value, mods, singleplayer bot instant battles... I don't really care that much about the story or single player campaigns... once you beat the game, there's little reason to play it again. Multiplayer and singleplayer skirmishes against bots (for practice, learning the level, etc) is what gives FPS's replay value. CoD just doesn't have that.

I "acquired" CoD2 when it came out.

I have yet to even install it.
To us, it is the BEAST.

The best WW2 game I've ever played was War of Infamy, a mod for Ghost Recon.

I loved CoD with the expansion - I still play it online. I thought the missions were much too linear as well, but the multiplayer was great; BF1942 maps were always so vast and empty (I call it "the boring war") and DoD maps are more linear than the CoD SP.

I've played the SPs a few times; they can be pretty fun just for the immersive value, even if not much choice is given. The Russian missions are definitely the best, both in the original and in the XP.

Ugh, the Dam mission Waaay too boring for me. I'd go back and listen for you, I know some German, but I hate that mission way too much. The worst part is finally getting to the bottom and realizing you have to go all the way back up the exact same way you came down.

Yeah, I agree the Dam mission is pretty bad. I liked it only because I like the overall "gameplay" of the game, ie. the AI and etc. And the Russian missions are definitely the best. My favourite is the sewers. The gameplay there is nothing great, but it gets marks up for atmosphere (as does that very first Russian mission).

The Dam mission started out pretty nice, sniping the guards in those beautiful surroundings, but it indeed went downhill once you had to go inside. Besides, did anyone else find it strange you had snow-topped mountains in the background? The Rhur area never struck me as particularly mountainous.

I agree it's too linear, which is especially annoying in the expansion pack. Several times I somehow got ahead of the scriped events which made the scripted events occur out of key.
It's also annoying that for a game in which you're supposed to be just a part of the machinery, the AI is overly focused at you: machine guns only start firing once you arrive at the scene, even though your entire squad was already present, enemy soldiers sometimes run through a hail of bullets just to melee attack you etc. Hopefully the next game in this type will have an AI that assesses the situation by itself.

It's still an amazing game though. Several moments just gave goosebumps.

It was an incredibly immersive FPS game. I loved it! It felt you were right in the middle of the actual war. Great graphics, nice team system (though they weren't all that smart), and great use of sound and atmosphere.

The last time I played, I killed a player named Ted Striker. Coincidence? I think so!

Call of Duty 2 on the Xbox 360 in a home theatre is the most immersive game I've ever played. Amazing experience.

COD & COD2 are excellent games

I also have to say Day of Defeat Source is awesome as well

I also enjoyed Hidden and Dangerous II which is a lot of fun as a squad based game and different play

I think it is very healthy for the gaming Industry to have such a diversity

Anybody plays the COD & COD: United Offensive MP games? I've been having some exhilarating battles on the tank-based maps such as Foy and Kursk. Total mayhem.

You should try it out. It's extremely rewarding to batter the enemy with a tank-charge, or conversely, taking out their tanks with anti-tank weapons. (I've never played any other FPS games in MP though, so I don't know how they dompare)

                          And thanks.

I have both but as my post count states, CTP, CIV III and CIV IV along with AOEIII are sucking the soul out of my gaming time

I may try some shooter this weekend though

                            Peace

I play CoD:UO MP from time to time; kursk is a good map, though I find that whoever takes the high ground (opposite the windmill) inevitably wins the entire game. The Russians seem to have a harder time of this than most, for whatever reason. I think my favorite maps are italy and kharkov; foy is nice, but I hate playing the Americans because of that big open field. It's snipe city for any German who gets to the American side, at least until they get an 88 shell up their scope.
