  • Tim Train Interview

The Gaming Steve Podcast features an interview with Tim Train of Big Huge Games fame. He talks about Rise of Legends and also gives an opinion on the director's cut of Aliens.

As a SMAC fan, I had to cringe when Steve gave a disparaging view of Alpha Centauri.

I think he discredited all his opinions.

Is there a transcipt about the Alpha Centauri part?

Their basic complaint is that the science fiction genre is not accessible enough. For example, the techs and improvements are incomprehensible to the uninitiated.

Gaming Steve has used the same argument to explain the greater popularity of the fantasy genre in games. Everyone it seems can understand goblins, dragons, and other mythological creatures, but when it comes to science fiction, most people can't relate.

Science fiction is my favourite genre. I loved the Mars mod for Civ 2, despite having to constantly reference just what I was researching and building. Alpha Centauri on the other hand seemed utterly intuitive to me.
