HoMM4 - Complete

This has just been released here (or re-released perhaps?).
I know HoMM4 wasn't as well received as HoMM3 but could somebody possibly tell me exactly what the differences were?
Was it bad period or was this just in comparison to 3?

I do like the third one, although I've never finished any of the campaigns and generally spend my time puttering around making and tweaking various maps.

I took it back after a day. From what I remember it had dreadful graphics (both technically and artistically) and less of everything (towns, units, etc).

The big change was the the hero now is a character in the game and will fight, rather then just cast spells.

A lot of new units in the game and with the addons some are quite powerful.

I can only say that I played all the campaigns in the game and the wpansion packs. I have not finished all the maps, which I did on III.

I prefer III, but I have some fun with IV. There is at least one or two sites that were making mpas for the last I check.

I understand V will go back to non combat heroes.
