  • Freespace 2 Open

I posted about this on Eventis, and decided I'd spread the word here as well, for those who didn't know about this.

I'll quote a bit from the Freespace Wiki

The Freespace Source Code Project is the result of the continual upgrade of the original code for Freespace 2, released by Volition in 2002. So far, its achievements have ranged from things as fundamental as core level HTL and DX8 overhauls of the engine to support higher poly models and new texture types, to things as specific as individual sexps for campaign makers.

In 2002, Dave Baranec (One of the guys who worked on Freespace/2) was generous enough to get the Freespace 2 source released on the now-defunct Volition Watch. Although minus important components like PXO and the ability to play movies, new features (such as glowpoints) were quickly added. Ship class limits were bumped, causing FS2 modders around the world to rejoice. The various programmers making minor enhancements soon organized into the Freespace Source Code Project (FSSCP) and kept on working. Glow mapping, shine mapping, DirectX 8.0 support, a new multiplayer network system, and dozens of new SEXPs have followed over the years.

For those of you who still have the actual retail version of Freespace that you can install, all you need to do is get FS2Open, add the Media VPs you like, configure the game to your preference, and enjoy. For everyone else who needs to find the game online,

here is one possible source; there also exists a Torrent for it. I've been playing the game, and am still working on getting all the different mods installed - I'm just wanting to improve the graphics for now. There are many, many user-made campaigns available, although I'm still doing the original still.

The game even supports online play, although I haven't tested this out yet.

Strangely enough i re-installed this game today to test a new joystick i bought.

I found myself getting quite involved but still suffered from the basic problem that i'm no good at these sorts of games.

Still new shiny things are always welcome

Only if you can't see gamma rays. I've owned FS2 since it first came out.. have just in the past couple months installed it... and STILL haven't played it! Why??? WHY???

So how do I get the shiny stuff?

I think I'll sit this one out and wait for Elite 4
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
            Once again...

                That's a long wait I fear.
Any links to speculation most welcome.

X3 - reunion will be out soon. Not the same as Freespace2 (less combat, more trade), but definitely something an elite fan should look at.

Though Elite's best feature (the realistic physics, and realistic space travel) remain something inexistant in any other game

Independence War series had real physics. I recommend IWar2 if you can find it. (The original needs glide to run.. so unless you have a voodoo card laying around... PBLT!)

And I saw X3 at my local EB games two days ago.

FS2 Open is a work of art, graphics-wise. Unfortunately, when I installed it, it screwed up my crosshairs so that they now appear roughly halfway towards the bottom left-hand corner of my screen, and I am reduced to aiming by guesswork. Not fun.

I've not heard of anyone having that problem, but I'll look around and see.
