  • Logitech G7

I've always wondered why we don't have a gaming hardware discussion thread in this forum

Anyone else have a Logitech G7? I must admit to being very impressed by it, out of the box (5 minutes ago ). The hot-swapping resolutions are fantastic, not that I've had any use for them yet, but just to see the effect ... And it works fine at a MUCH greater distance than my previous logitech wireless mice. Only objection I have so far is that, 5 minutes later, the SetPoint software is STILL installing, and I think it's crashed ... and the left/right scroll doesn't work without it (or anyway it doesn't work at the moment )

Hmm, the software eventually needed an end task and restart ... but installed fine after that (even recalling how far it had gotten).

However, the scrollwheel is stiff, and giving my index finger quite the workout ...

        I my MX510. It's all I'll ever want from a mouse.

I have a quite standard mouse, one of the Intellipoint series. I've had it for years though - it was state of the art when it came out (an early optical one), and I don't like the explorer shape and have never used any other I'd prefer.

My interesting kit is my mousemat. It is a glass icemat with black backing..........it is just so perfect a surface it's untrue. It cost me an arm and a leg (shipped from Iceland) back when I was a competitive FPS player.

Heh, I got my mousemat as a freebie from the presentation booth of the Finnish Air Forces at a career fair three years ago. I like it because it sticks to the table surface like glue.

Mine is so pro it has little rubber feet to ensure perfect stability in the middle of the most frantic fragfest. And a little cloth.......it's so easy to clean.

I also have teflon coated covers for the feet of my mouse. Yes, I used to take FPS gaming quite seriously.

I've got a Logitech too, but mine isn't wireless. It works fine - but I only got it after the last one died. I'm sure its life would have been longer if I'd used the keys more in Civ 2.
Using the mouse to move, on the other hand, is just stupid.

Check the G7 out ... especially you FPS gamers. 2,000 dpi resolution ... takes about 1-2 centimeters of motion to go across a 1200xwhatever screen

And it has teflon feet (standard, not tape) ...

okay, here is info from Newegg

                        damn, this thing is expensive!!

and it looks exactly the same as my MX510

so what exactly is the benefit of this thing?

why should I spend $80 on a new mouse that is almost exactly the same as my current mouse? (except it is wireless, which is not a feature I want)

It looks like a good product.

but I don't think I really need it

it has a perfect 5 out of 5 rating though... (17 reviews)

although, so does the MX510... (187 reviews)

Actually, it is rather different from the mx510 Less buttons, which for some people is a plus and others a minus. I'm sort of neutral; i'd probably have prefered them keep the fastscroll buttons, but it's not a big loss, and I could always use the tiltwheel for that if i cared. Teflon feet, which the 510 doesn't have unless you add them yourself via tape.

Why would they change the design anyway ... the design works fine

It's GOOD wireless, not the 27mhz stuff the rest of the mice use ... 2.4Ghz, one of the first of its kind. Use it from across the room if you choose ... and just as good performance in FPS as a wired mouse. Really. (Add on the 2000 dpi ... )

The G5 is the wired equivalent, btw, $55 or so.

Anyway, 2000 DPI is amazing ... really ... and you can hotswap the resolutions if you need to (w/o using software - it's built-in to the mouse).

                          Spec comparison:
                          G7: 2000 dpi (3 levels), 6.4 MPx/sec, 20g accel, 65 inch/sec max speed
                          MX510: 800 dpi (1 level), 5.3 MPx/sec, 15g accel, 40 inches/sec max speed

AND it's wireless ... maybe i'm weird, but I dislike all the wires that I have as it is ... less wires

well I don't care about wireless... I have no use for that feature... frankly, it's more trouble than it's worth IMO... it costs more, and you have to futz with batteries

I don't understand the point of wireless mice and keyboards... those aren't devices that you walk around with! I can understand phones and network connections (wanting to connect PCs in other rooms), but not mice and keyboards... seems useless to me.

Is the increased resolution really worth it? When I upgraded to this mouse, I did it mainly because of the good reviews and because I was curious of the increase DPI over the mouse I used to have. But to be honest, I don't notice any difference. And in terms of my performance in FPS games, it doesn't make me a better player.

I see the Spec comparison, but will that actually make a difference? Does it justify me spending $80 for a new mouse? (or even $55 for the wired version)

Plus, I am in the camp that likes more buttons.

In Counter-Strike, I need them for switching weapons and stuff.

I'll check out the G5 out if my MX510 breaks down. But for now, I'm going to stick with the mouse I have.

But this is a good thread snoopy.

                            We need more like these.

                              Yessir.

I like wireless mouse/keyboard just because the wires get in the way. I can't put the computer on one side of my chair and the mouse on the other - the mouse wire goes across my lap in that case, or worse. My poor desk is cluttered enough as it is ...

DPI - I like it, but it's not why I got this mouse. (I got it for the 2.4ghz transmitter; and this got much better reviews than the 610 or whatever the other 2.4ghz mouse was.) The mouse certainly moves a LOT faster, and i'd imagine in a FPS game where you need a lot more accuracy, AND a lot faster move from one spot to another, it'd come in handy. But, I don't play many FPS, so ...
