Thanks Gamecube for having mentioned Jedi Knight. It was an excellent experience for me, as the levels were great and the game wazs an immersive experience. The gameplay was solid, but my love for the game came from the amazing maps. Ah memories

        Thief/Thief 2
        NOLF
        Unreal
        Unreal Tournament
        System Shock 2
        Decent 3
        Aliens vs. Predator
        Deus Ex
        Heretic 2
        Jedi Knight 2
        Hexen 2
        Half Life

Here's my list. Some of these have been mentioned already. All of these are quite good and worth checking out. I'm partial to Thief, Deus Ex, Half Life, and Unreal Tournament.

UT really should be played MP but the bots are not half bad. No story there but pure action.

Thief is a great variation on FPS since you don't usually go the direct route. Much slower gameplay as you're hiding and sneaking around.

Half Life is a classic. I don't care for the jumping puzzles but the story is good.

Deus Ex has a great story and lots of variation and plot twists.

Ok, sounds like I'll look for Half life - shouldnt be all that hard to find in the bargain bins.

Quake is just as ghoulish as Doom, I take it?

Return to Castle Wolfenstein seems to be basic to the history of the genre - but not really what im looking for, I take it?

Impression browsing Moby is that there arent really any big name shooter games between the old ones ive played, like Space Invaders and Asteroids, and RTCW?

Ask Grandpa Troll about WWII shooters - no chance of zombies there.

If you get Half-Life, try to get a version that you don't need Steam(ing pile of crap) to use. New re-releases WILL require it, though the original and older re-releases or package deals won't. You should note that there are alien monsters in Half-Life, though not nearly to the scale of other games.

Quake is alot like Doom, yes.

i presume the old copies wont require Steam.

Its not that i dont want to ever see a Zombie, just that I dont like the emphasis on horror movie type grossness.

RTCW is quite a modern (ish) game you can't run. Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake are all games you wont like.

Play HL first as I said. We'll take it from there.

No One Lives Forever is a fun game and for a vid game has a good sense of humour (well i laughed).

No Zombies but a lot of bond type baddies.

Here is a note on Quake 2 if you ever want to try it: It doesn't have a horror theme. It is set in the future and an alien race called the Strogg is attacking Earth. The Strogg capture their enemies and change their bodies into freakish war weapons. Most enemies resemble humans with various weapons grafted into their limbs.

Though the occasional Strogg Dogg (heh heh) or thingy with melee weapons jumping from the darkness have made me jump.

For most games you should also remember to re-map the keys:

                      W: forward
                      A: sidestep left
                      S: backward
                      D: sidestep right

You may have to change some others, but I think this is all that is needed to control Half-Life well.

                        Deus Ex

I picked up a copy of Quake 2 not so long ago but could never install the blasted thing. It kept saying that it required my PC to be in 'Australian-English' mode ...

And before any smart-alecky wiseguy suggests that perhaps I should've interpreted this to mean that I should reboot with my settings changed to 'English(Australian)', I did actually try this.

heh i always use the arrow up/down/left/right keys in shooters

that way there aren't too many other keys bogging down my sweet reflexes

ive never reprogrammed my keyboard - you mean you have to do that for FPS? Geez, another thing wrong with them.

Maybe FPS should only be played by lefties, or something.

the orginal unreal tournament can run on those specs. but i wouldnt recommend it.once you do,you cant ever go back to the inferior games mentioned here like quake,,halflife etc

besides which plenty of players online to smoke, and lots of maps from Nali City

                                1. It should be single player oriented, as far as possible
and yes i play it singeplayer more than MP. theres also an insane mod called UT4Ever thats a must play if you go with UT...
