I can build a colony ship but first i'll build a few espionage probes to go and explore the potential sites for my new colony(i can use them for that right?).

all you need is to find a free slot, look on the galaxy screen.

True, but i was hoping i'd have a way to check out a planet before commiting my very expensive colony ship(remember i'm not raiding resources!), as i understand that once you've sent your colony ship to a planet, you cant call it back even if the planet is not so good?

The planet is randomly generated when you land on it. There are certain sizes it can be and certain temperature ranges, but even then it isn't a guarantee. I can look up the relevant details once I get home from work.

If you don't like the planet, you can always cut the colonist's life-support systems.

            cheers Skanky

well i got a choice of the first three slots nearest the sun or one slot 2nd from the edge of the solar system. So it will either be hot or cold, depending on which is most likely to be largest.

Don't get close to the sun. I'll explain why later, right now I'm looking up the system details.

Go for either a 6 or a 7 slot. They have the best chance of having enough fields.
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
                Once again...

                  pos9: average: 159, 60% between 129 and 188 fields
                  pos10: average: 101, 60% between 79 and 122 fields
                  pos11: average: 98, 60% between 81 and 116 fields
                  pos12: average: 105, 60% between 85 and 129 fields
                  pos13: average: 110, 60% between 60 and 160 fields
                  pos14: average: 84, 60% between 42 and 126 fields
                  pos15: average: 101, 60% between 54 and 149 fields

It is possible to get a planet with much higher fields than show here, but it is also possible to get much smaller planets too. Still looking for information on temperature, but basically the further out you are, the colder it is likely to be.

Temperature affects two things: deuterium production rate and solar sats production. The colder it is, the more deuterium is produced. The hotter it is, the more energy the sats produce. The reason I like cold planets so much is that sats are extremely expensive for the power they provide and extremely vulnerable to any attack whatsoever. Not only are solar plants cheaper per energy produced (up to a certain high level) but they produce the same amount of energy regardless of distance from the sun.

                      Wunderbar Skanky!

                      Position
                      Min Temp (average)
                      Average Temp
                      Max Temp (average)
                      Lowest known temp
                      Highest known temp.

Keine idea what the heck the green thing at the bottom says.
[edit]Oh! Something like this table is based on a sample of however many planets, thanks to all who helped. [/edit]

I'm annoyed that while you can cancel your building construction and research, once you've put something into the queue at the shipyard, then there's no way to stop it without building an improvement to the shipyard, which cuts off production automatically, and then cancelling that. Do you lose the resources for half-built ships/defences if you cancel them like this?

I didn't know you could cancel like that. It probably just deletes the resources.

Excellent info Skanky i have something to plan while i wait the next 1:15:30 for my colony ship to be ready

Looks like its position 12 as front runner 1-3 are all vacant and my home planet is on 6. I guess fussion power is the way to go on planets further out from the sun?

I've just calculated that it will take 17,600 of metal, 52,800 of crystal and 19,200 of deuterium to even get to the point at which I can start researching Hyperspace Tech 1.
