  • Is Sid Meier Still Alive?

It just seems like ages since Sid Meier has come out with anything fresh. That golf game was his most recent attempt at innovation.

What ever happened to his dinosaur game?

Civ and Pirates are such an old franchise. I played the new Pirates! the other day, and it simply didn't capture me like when I originally played it on my Commodore 64. I've played the Civ franchise to death also. Civ 4 doesn't interest me in the slightest. I'm still happy playing SMAC.

At least Will Wright is working on an innovative new game. Peter Molyneux seems to have an endless supply of innovative titles (pity they can't live up to the hype), but Sid Meier seems to be doing nothing but riding on the coat tails of his former glory.

I remember a poll on the Firaxis website, that sought what fans wanted next. There was an option for SMAC 2, Colonization 2, and others, but I don't remember there being an option for something new.

Maybe Sid is happy with what he already has, and focuses on other things in life than computer games? I'm sure he makes quite a comfortable living by selling his name as a brand, and checking the office at Firaxis a few hours a day

Maybe he also has no innovative ideas for now, and will create something new only when inspiration strikes him.

eh? there are only so many genres of video games...

FPS's, RTS, TBS, RPG, sports, simulation, etc...

there are very few "fresh idea" games...

I like the idea of sequels... taking a good game, updating graphics, creating a new engine, fixing bugs (or creating new ones ), improving gameplay... basically, giving them an entirely new game!

I don't know if Civ4 will be as good as the hype is... I hope it will be...

but this complaint of yours is pretty weak... no offense or anything... just my 2 cents...

when you find a formula that works, you stick with it (although civ3 sucked, hopefully civ4 will be good)
To us, it is the BEAST.

Even if Pirates! is a sequel, its still one of most refreshing games out there

              Teh Poll

Despite the first question of the poll being "Which Sid Meier’s game/series (past or present) would you most like to see remade?", the final option is "I don’t care about remakes, give me something new!". It is also at 8% at this current point in time.

Spore seems to be a lot like MOO 3 to me - huge huge hype. Sure, Will has more reputation as a developer than Alan, still, I am not holding my breath.

I don't see Black and White as innovative. It's just the next installment in the Populus franchise.
