Aha! Well I started the first battle of the first campaign, but didn't read the objectives properly. The prince was about 2 turns moves worth away from the signpost when the wizard died. This lost me the game!
I know now to just blast to the northwest without worrying about the tough guys to the south, and use the wizard to protect the prince, rather than using a couple of fighters, and leaving the wizard to protect the rear inside the keep, as I did. D'oh!

All right. I finished the first level of the Elven campaign, and have got some human allies.
This is all on the easiest level, mind, so I'm far from ready for MP yet.

Yeah I agree. Lets set an agreed upon time to play soon.

I finished the next level, and it was remarkably easy - those horseman are really powerful if you know what you're doing, and only have your elven troops hide in the forest. Unlike the previous game, the allies were of great use.

                I didn't say I suck THAT much ...

I lost horribly to the AI several times though. I just haven't figured out the basic strategies of keeping units together, waiting for the right time of day, that sort of thing.

I'm playing the campaign now (the first one), and it's going okay I'm playing on hero level (2 out of 3) so to have a decent test at least... I don't like playing easy levels even for learning, as I learn bad habits I don't start Civ at chieftain except perhaps for one or two games, for the same reason ...

Take a look at some of the strategy posted in the Wesnoth forums.

Also, in the campaign it's important that you don't just play for the stated objectives. You need to use the earlier stages of the campaign to build up your gold and experience levels or you'll get rolled later.

Yeah ... I've been doing that.

Only the Isles mission is kylling me I have NO CLUE how to beat it. None.

Experienced troops count in this game, it can be worth it to restart and build up a good set of units.

Hint: try to have string of mages at various exp levels at hand. For every mage that is promoted get two more and soon you'll have a grand set of arch-, MoL and silver mages (their teleporting ability is very useful!) to choose from.

Isles is a problem though, no experienced units

I'm getting closer though, just need to avoid getting the mage and the outlaw killed.
