Chapter 3 – Farewell Papa Smurf


The news about Vanity’s violent death spread fast through the Smurf village. All Smurfs gathered in the main square.

“This is obviously the work of a second murderer. The MO is so much different”, Brainy Smurf speculated.
“That murderer must have been smurfy strong”, Slouchy commented.
“And quite handy with a hammer”, Nosey Smurf added.
“We need an official investigation”, Papa Smurf cut the discussion short. “I’m putting Nosey Smurf in charge. In the meantime let’s vote.”

But if Papa Smurf had had any idea about the outcome of that vote he wouldn’t have been so eager to call it. In the end the Smurfs voted Papa Smurf off.

“This is our chance Azrael”, Gargamel whispered to his cat. “We’ll use the opportunity to sneak into Papa Smurf’s house while the other Smurfs are occupied with his execution. I’ll mix the antidote and then we’ll finish the other Smurfs.”
“Meowww”, replied Azrael enthusiastically.

“Who is going to execute the sentence”, Snappy asked.
“I think the strongest among us is the best to carry out the death penalty”, Handy replied.

The other Smurfs agreed, so Hefty took the hammer and smashed Papa Smurf’s head with it.

“I’ll compose an elegy in Papa Smurf’s honour”, Harmony Smurf said after the execution.
“I’ll write the text of that poem”, Poet Smurf said.

While the other Smurfs attended the funeral ceremony for Papa Smurf, Gargamel and Azrael stayed in the village and snuck into Papa Smurf’s house. Gargamel started to check the available chemicals for his potion.

“Hmm, snake’s tongue – check. Wing of a bat, dried and ground – check. Leg of a spider – check…. Belladonna berries – empty!!! Damn, Azrael, we’re missing an ingredient! Belladonna.”
Gargamel and Azrael went through the house searching for it, but found only empty bottles. They heard voices which meant that the other Smurfs were coming back.
“Let’s get out of here Azrael. We’ll go out to search the forest for Belladonna berries tomorrow.”
“Meow!”

The next morning Poet Smurf was looking for Harmony Smurf to give him the poem he wrote about Papa Smurf’s death so Harmony could write notes for the elegy.

He entered Harmony’s home and found him sleeping. When he looked closer, he noticed that Harmony was actually dead, poisoned like poor Grouchy.
