  • The Greatest Mystery of the Age...

What will the Nintendo Revolution controllers look like? Nintendo have been very secretive about them, probably because they're worried Sony and Microsoft will steal their ideas. Still, the new controllers are set to be revealed some time this month.

This site has large selection of ideas. A lot of the serious money seems to be on some sort of modular controller which can be reconfigured in different ways, and virtually all the designs are wireless. Gyroscoptic motion sensors are popular as well.

    Some my favourites:

A simple design that's just a GC controller with more buttons. Unlikely, because Nintendo have hinted that they want to keep things simple.

Touchscreens are a popular choice, allowing the 'buttons' to be reconfigured depending on the game being played.

One of the modular designs I mentioned. The action button configuration sucks, though.

Some of the designs are just weird.

Scroll wheels on a joypad? Sounds good. I don't like that tragic little start button, though.

Whatever it lacks in ergonomics and features, it makes up for in ease of understanding what the buttons do.

I just hope it isn't too silly. The DS's touch screen really turns me off.

I think the Saturn controller is the most comfortable. The Xbox had the worst one ever. The initial controller was giant and chunky, and the buttons are not good for mashing. It is painful trying to play Metal Slug, or other such games that require intensive use. Thank goodness for the Street Fighter controllers.

My worst fears came true. I hate the new controller. No. Hate is too weak a word. I loath it. I am reviled. Disgusted. I feel nauseous.

On another level I am also excited.

Maybe I need a shock like this to free me from my gaming addiction.

The Xbox 360 for all its bells and whistles appalls me. I have little interest the photo realistic graphics and the 3D applications it promises. I can go for a walk outside in the sunshine and experience pure 3D reality for nothing. The direction of the 360 is bad enough, but the outrageous price is something I am no longer willing to afford. I bought an Xbox largely to play ports and remakes of Dreamcast games, but nothing short of a 2D scrolling shooter sequel to Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga would make me consider a 360 - and even if Treasure do release such a game, it probably won't get Western release, let alone PAL release.

Likewise, I have just crossed the Revolution off my list. Being backward compatible, and having the entire library of Nintendo games available for download is useless - utterly ****ing useless - if you have to play them with a retarded remote control.

That leaves me only one option: PS3. I don't like being cornered though. I can sniff freedom, and it is enticing.

Already I have enough games to realistically last me the rest of my life. Thanks to emulation, the complete library of classic arcade games - 2D gaming in all its glory - is already mine. There is decades worth of gaming pleasure to be had. On top of that I have a shelf full of games I have barely touched, let alone extracted every last gram of pleasure from. What a mindless consumer I have become.

What the hell do you want? You don't want good graphics, you don't want backwards-compatibility, you don't want realism, and it seems to me you don't want any game at all except the old arcade games, which you already have.

I don't want a remote control to play games with. I thought that was obvious.

What I do want is games with depth.

Whether that be 2D gaming on current consoles, such as Cave developed games like Mushihimesama, Do Don Pachi Daioujou DV, and Espgaluda, or the upcoming release of Raiden III. Fighting games such as Guilty Gear, Virtua Fighter, or good old Street Fighter. Rhythm games like Amplitude and Gitaroo-Man.

Games that require practice and persistence. To be graceful, absorbed, mind gone, euphoric in that moment of success after many failures.

I don't see how grace could be possible waving a fricken remote control around.

If this new controller heralds a new era of innovation, I will battle the awkward control mechanics of waving a remote control around. But my intuition tells me this is just another cheap gimmick as with the DS's touch pad.

The DS hasn't introduced any significant innovations. It is just the same old game play, crippled with an annoying control system. The DS is probably fine if you are willing to sit down at a table with it so you don't get tired of holding it with one hand, but that kind of defeats the purpose of hand held gaming.

I intended to post "chill, it's just a controller"

                          *runs*

But then I saw it. And I'm not going to any more.

Erm ... you do realise that Nintendo are releasing a regular controller as well? The remote thingy is just a wacky (and stupid) bundled add-on.
If I'm posting here then Counterglow must be down.
