I personally prefer the Type IX boat. The only problem with it is that it has such a long range that it can be a pain to complete a patrol off the shore of NYC when you want to be hunting freight on the eastern Atlantic. On the other hand, it has lots of torps, and I have a habit of using a lot of those. So I usually just complete the patrol wherever it takes me, and do my best to hunt freight on the way back and as long as my fuel takes me.
One of these days I'll play further and get my hands on the Type XX, a REAL submarine. VII and IX are just torpedo boats that can submerge if things get tricky.
