  • Paradox Interactive tries to bring "Diplomacy" a PC near you...

... and not have it suck (like the 1999 Microprose game did).

    Official Site:

If anyone can do this, I'd say Paradox has a good claim. Right now, they seem to appreciate strategy gaming and have a good reverence for the classic board game.

I wish them luck, though Diplomacy is one of those games that are extremely difficult to write a decent AI for.

I sure hope they improve the graphics. The current one looks like it could be an MS Office application.

I've been following this one for a while. Looks very interesting. The Paradox Diplomacy forum is pretty much dead, unfortunately.

Indeed. That was my same thought. I don't really want to buy a Diplomacy game where I'll have to find people online just to get a good game (though I may do that once in a while).

And I think the graphics ain't half bad.

I can't say I'm surprised really. There are undoubtedly a significant number of people around the world who play diplomacy but a PC game is really only going to supply them with an alternative interface. No matter how good the AI gets (and Paradox don't often deliver resilient AI) I don't see it appealing to a significant number of modern gamers. It just doesn't have the appeal of a WW2 or even Age of Exploration world conquest game which even their most anal games so far have always had.
To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection.

I do not have much respect for Paradox anymore. They have been completely neglecting their games for what... a 3d engine for a board game? And then they go and make a beer and pretzel game on top of it.

Diplomacy, a beer and pretzel game? Aren't games incredibly long? I admit, I never played it, but it promises to be a breath of fresh air.

Well, I've never played it either, but it seems rather simplistic... perhaps not a beer and pretzel game, but still a far cry from the standard set by previous paradox games, I think.

Simplistic = complex, actually, like chess.

                          geography is just awful
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

Diplomacy might be the first Paradox game since EU1 I won't buy... But MrT said some time back that this engine would be very good for remakes of their older games, especially CK. That sounds more like what I'd do if I had the option.

Actually, if the AI works, this may be the FIRST Paradox game I buy since EU II .
