Does anyone else have the PC version and having trouble with sounds?

I am having trouble getting all of the sound effects to work. The music plays, and I hear most of what is going on, but when I finish a mission I don't hear what the characters are saying. I don't hear the engine of whatever vehicle I have or the steps when I'm running.

My sound card is a Soundblaster Live! and has the latest drivers. The game box says it recommends a Soundblaster Audigy 2...though I don't really want to buy a new soundcard just for this game. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a known problem with the SB Live card. I should know, I have that too.

Set your speakers to quadraphonic and reduce hardware acceleration for your soundcard to the 2nd lowest (or lowest) setting. The lowest setting was buggy for me and still skipped, but the second lowest seems to work fine.

I have it for the PC, and I have an SB Live, but I haven't experienced any problems (then again, I'm only playing with 2 speakers right now.) Sound is set to high. Check out GTAforums for help with your issues.

Great game, though the jaggies are sometimes grating. I tweaked the draw distances to 2 - 3x normal, so I've been looking for optimal settings. 1024 x 768 looks a bit rough, even at 3x AA & very high graphic settings, but one step up (1152 x whatever) with 2x AA & just high settings starts giving me the occasional hesitation when looking around quickly. I may have to reduce the draw distance a bit.

Regardless, wonderful game. Between this and Battlefield 2, June is a great month for gamers.

I'm having a blast with this game. Much more fun than Vice City. I especially like taking over other 'hoods. I now have targets to kill rather than just randomly shooting people.

Got it for the PC a couple weeks ago, been having an absolute blast--been in San Fierro for a while now, it seems like it is starting to wrap up.

The only thing I like better about Vice City is the soundtrack. Otherwise, this game kicks about 37 different kinds of ass.

I, on the other hand, dislike many of the changes that have been made.

For instance, almost all of the radio stations suck completely and utterly. The speech of the characters is difficult to understand at times even with subtitles. The whole skipping speech thing due to the SB Live didn't win any favours. No longer do we have numbers that can actually be used to convey information - we have a red bar for health and a white bar for armour. If we get hit, we have a less-filled white bar. If we train up our muscles, we have a bar that is somewhat longer - it must be, it has a plus sign next to it. How much bigger it is is anyone's guess. No longer can you do any missions in any order either - at the start of the game you cannot do any missions that increase your stats like health or muscles before "unlocking" those features by doing storyline missions, otherwise the game will crash. The crosshairs from previous series are also gone. Now we have to right-click and then aim and shoot.

Though I have it for XBox. The countryside is so freaking cool.. though it sucks having to drive the whole thing for a mission.

I am also in San Fierro (haven't been able to play it too much due to studying). Woozy is a blast!

I also like the cameos by people in the other GTAIII series games (GTAIII and GTA:VC). Nice touch. The abilility to change your look is fun as well (and gives you a reason to spend your cash at times ).

Some of the voice actors they got was great as well. Samuel L. Jackson, Peter Fonda, Chris Penn, James Woods? Whoa!

I just found an easy way to do the vigilante missions:

First you need to get a tank (Area 51 anyone?), then press the key to start the missions. This should be easy as a walk in the park

If you don't like having a 5 star police rating during the missions all you need to do is to go to a pay 'n' spray garage. When you get there find a normal car, but be quick to get this car into the garage before your car is destroyed by all the shooting. As soon as the stars stop flashing just take the tank and do the missions
If you're afraid you'll screw up you might want to "save" the tank. Just go to the garage in San Fierro, it's large enough to hold the tank, then save the game and you now have a tank to go back to in case you fail
