No i'll stay as far as possible from the star destroyer. Its just that i think the shuttle i need to find will be the only ship heading towards the SD - everything else seems intent on blasting me to atoms

haven't got the in-combat shots yet - soonish i hope.

I didn't realise that the 'Fins' of the tie-fighters acted as armour. I guess to componsate for not having shields like the rebel ships?

Well 1 week later and i'm still getting my rebel arse shot to hell and back on the same mission

heres the picture of my shame: caught in a pincer move with Ties to the front and imperial shuttles to the rear.

The explosion on the right is i think my engine, the red laser fire is responsible coming from probably 2-3 Imp shuttles behind me.

Luckily the ties in front have just been damaging my shields at this point.

Still about 15 seconds later and i was a rapidly expanding ball of gas.

        Nice pics!

Looks like you lost your aft shields first dude. Man, you're making me real nostalgic for these games again.

You don't have any support or wingmen to help you out in this mission? What kind of Rebel attack is that???

They may have just gotten distracted by TIEs elsewhere. Or they could have been destroyed. IIRC, wingmen aren't worth much in either X-Wing or TIE Fighter.

I should have two X-wings acting as cover for the ties

Still i end up having to dog-fight most of the ties myself, never much fun in a y-wing with its sluggish handling.

And then i got about 6-7 of those imperial shuttles to take care of, while finding the one that has the kidnapped Sulstan
leader onboard. Got to use the y-wings ion cannon to disable that shuttle, then provide cover to the rescue shuttle as it seems as soon as the Sulstan shuttle is disabled my X-wings bug out and leave me to it.

This is the furthest i've got in the mission, as the remnants of the empires ships that are left at this point team up with the new tie bombers/interceptors that get scrambled from the Star Destroyer to take out the rescue shuttle.

It wouldn't be so bad if i could give some commands to the X-wings, but as they are in a different battle group they do their own thing.

Still i like a challange, and have decided to go back to the training missions and scenarios to pick up a few more ribbons and badges

I always liked Rebel Assault, myself. Taking down an entire star destroyer = sweeeet.

TIE Fighter lets you take down entire Calamari Cruisers and entire Star Destroyers, though.

Dude, child_of_Thor, If I were you, I'd be screaming at those X-Wing pilots to give me cover.

But, fortunately, I'm an Imperial pilot.

Traitor! The dirty Rebel Alliance is evil! (but trying to engage a MonCal cruiser with a nest of TIE's is still a challenge, especially when those damned X-Wings are nearby.

                    edit...
Well i would if i knew how - i cant use the 'wingman' commands as i'm on my own(single y-wing).

The Xwings(two) are in a different battle group(if thats the term?), so i cant seem to give them orders...........its very annoying as this particular mission is quite tough for the bucket-of-bolts that is the y-wing.

I still havent completed it(on my 18th attempt!) - but its ok, i've gone back to school to get some more training in at the various rebel training centers, and have been playing SW-Rebellion(Supremacy here in the uk) to cool off

I'm going to play X-wing 'purist' style(except for my cheeky save pilot file cheat ), so i wont let myself play Tie-Fighter until i've completed X-wing(if thats possible?).

My life has been dominated by Star Wars these last two weeks. I've been watching all the movies from Episode1 onwards to the origonal classics, and playing Star Wars games in the rest of my free time.
All this while wearing my Darth Vader slippers(yes i also battle against the dark side from time to time)

                    Anyway Red Five out!

On the other hand, you have to actually remember to transfer power over to the shields often.

Nah, you have the exact same max speed under both of those conditions. But, if you're good at evasive manuevers and you tend to shoot a lot, max lasers and maintenence shields is good so your laser never get down to that obnoxious three-hit-kill on Tie fighters.

It definitely is more efficient to charge your shields by upping your laser recharge and transferring the energy to shields. Don't ask me why, but I've found this to be true throughout X-Wing, and throughout TIE Fighter with the possible exception of the Missile Boat. (I'm not so sure this is the case for the Corellian transports in X-Wing Alliance, but the fighter craft definitely benefit from the lasers-to-shields trick there too.)

If you say so. Anyhow, I can't find my manual and I can't for the life of me remember the wingman commands. What are they again?
