Dissident- don't worry about the tech thing- it's impossible and a BAD idea to be good at both magic and tech in that game.

As a side note and warning to all- even though dresses provide AC 2 or 3... and you can buy them for men, men refuse to wear them in the character creation- they're a waste of money- as I discovered to my chagrin after creating: Sir Rodgar Throckmorton... an amazingly flamboyant character in a victorian-age setting, no doubt.

If you hire the ogre in the pub, the bridge is no problem at all.

There you go. There were several ways if you tried hard enough.

The only problem with the bridge is ytou shouldn't try to get through unless your character is a fighter and/or you have the half-ogre to help. But there are many ways to get through the gate. By talking, paying, fighting, sneaking, and more. Brute force is certainly the hardest way, but a good grenade or dynamite can do wonders.

I'm having a hell of a time downloading the latest patch. File planet doesn't work. It keeps saying I need to log in, even though I am logged in. I tried this with both internet explorer and firefox. I even tried gameplanet, I can't even connect to their ftp server.

hmm, I don't think I can complete some of these quests without the ability to even pick up an technological item. Can I even beat the game without being able to pick up these items?

I don't like that. I may have to restart with a different character.

You can win the game without any technological item. In fact, when you become really good at magic, those technological things are better avoided because you will systematically fumble if you try to use them.
What kind of character did you make?

this character is more melee orientated. He's a half orc. But I didn't make him dumb. He has an intelligence of 11.

should I raise my intelligence any higher? I want to make sure I have access too as many quests as I can.

The only annoying thing is his charisma is 2. so his initial reaction is horrible. But with the higher intelligence he seems to be able to talk his way into a better disposition.

he's a pretty good character. My other character didn't hit much in melee. He pretty much sucked. He was supposed to be a fighter/mage. But I think it's probably better to do one or the other.

Intelligence of 11 is already huge if you don't plan for a tech-oriented character. Before the bridge, it seems extremely high for any kind of character in my opinion. A charisma of 2 means he'll have trouble getting any henchman beyond Virgil, and trouble talking his way out of the bridge. So you still have to either fight your way out, pay or do something else the bandits might tell you. Fighting will be hard considering the points you spent on intelligence were not spent on dex, str, hit points or throw/melee/dodge skills.
Did you get any magic items or tech items (explosives) that can help you?

I'm kinda sorta to the bridge you guys are talking about I think. Basically you have to clear the bandits out. I'm waiting until I'm a little higher level to do that.

It should be notied I'm a trollspawn or whatever. My strength, dexterity, and constitution are all 11. And my melee is 3 (and I'm trained as an apprentice in it). i'm also an aprrentice in throwing. and I think I have 1 grenade in my inventory.

I haven't had much a chance to play, as I've been having problems with my A/C unit, now I'm having problems with my vehicle. Everything is going wrong at once it seems.

you can travel around the area that is blocked off on the map screen...from those random encounters you can level up quite well and every now and then you'll run into someone who will drop phat loot. AFter that bridge is easy.
