During the SP it's not an "open universe of possibility" or whatever the marketing says, but that's okay, because you almost always are allowed to do as you wish within some limited area between missions, and since you're required to move from area to area, you always have new systems, equipment, and opponents to check out. In short, the campaign is very fun.

Once out of the SP campaign, however, things do get repetitive. You can't access the best gear during the campaign, so you can try to upgrade further if you wish afterwards; but the random missions, and trading, are all you're left with once the campaign is over. The random missions will have gotten repetitive by the time you're done with the campaign, and while trading is interesting to try for a while (it really only becomes profitable once you're done with the campaign and thus free to travel across the map), it too gets repetitive.
What is fun, however (at least IMO) is doing one or two missions from each base, reading the news and talking to the people in the bar while your their. TONS of content.

Doing so is pointless, though. Yeah, more of a challenge, but you might as well just double or triple their hull and shields. Speaking from experience, it's REALLY annoying to have an enemy suddenly go back to full health or shields.

So, anyone know any good mods for this game then?

There aren't any. They're all crap because they are all full of "ZOMFG we have teh Uber ships!" I know, I used to actually be pretty active in the FL modding community.

            I'd forgotten about that.
It's only a 150Mb dl though. IIRC the full install is >3x that so it probably has most of the cutscenes, etc, missing?

Sorry Kuci but that's a load of nonsense. Over the past 6 months or so some of the seriously big mods have been coming out with a new release every week or so.
You're not suggesting that you've tried them all are you?
They weren't much to write home about to start with, admittedly, but lately they've improved drastically.

It's very likely, yes. But if the alternative is paying $20 for shipping or more then I know what I'd do.

They still have the basic problem of not making a coherent universe and having lots of "ZOMFG teh Uber!" ships. The only decent mod I've seen is NU, and it's still not out after a year of dev.

The economist has spoken! But since I'm an economist too I believe there are no free lunches, so I'll order it...

Anyway, surely a classic game like System Shock II is worth its price? If it's half as good as Deus Ex has proven to be so far, I'll be more than satisfied!
