  • Apolyton remembers... "Red Baron"

I probably played this game more than any other. More than Civilization. More than Civ2. More than SMAC.

    Things I'll never forget:

--Getting that first challenge to face an enemy ace, one-on-one.

--Accepting a challenge, only to realize this one is a trap... the scoundrel has brought a couple wingmen with him.

--Gaining the rank of captain and getting to choose your plane's color scheme.

--Being invited to join one of the elite squadrons, like Les Cignones, the Lafayette Escadrille, or the Flying Circus.

--Going on a routine escort or patrol mission, and stumbling across a flight of enemy aces... your sphincter level suddenly shooting up to a 10.

    --Hunting down a zeppelin.

--Lining up a foe in your crosshairs and letting loose a stream of lead, only to have your gun jam.

--Wounded, with a damaged plane, desperately trying to escape, coasting low over the front, hoping to last just long enough to set down in friendly territory... this usually did not end well.

--Designing your own custom mission and reviewing it from every angle, putting together an Oscar-worthy action film. (My personal favorite--me and a trio of French aces tangle with a Flying Circus-escorted zeppelin over the streets of Paris.)

Christ, I wish I could get this game to work on my modern computer.

Anyone else play this classic? What are your memories?

I think that Apolyton does not remember...
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

      Punkasses, the lot of 'em!

This is also the game from whence I stole my name.

I played this game ... well, a lot. Played Civilization I much more, though. I had loads of free time back in 1992-1994. Luckily I still have my good old Win95/Pentium I 75Mhz/8Mt RAM with what I can play both of them

I just sold my copy of Red Baron 3D for $60. I think I paid around $20 for it. Now that's a game to remember.

'twas a brilliantly great game. Best flying game, ever.

                      I heard that!!!

I spent absolutely hours playing Knights of the Sky (not KotS, note ), and the only frustration was that you could only play as the allies.

i remember Snoopy Vs the Red Baron.

                        By Milton Bradley

the player playing Snoopy had a dog house - a plastic box, with a roof/lid that you could lift, so the house was either open or closed. pointing into the house was a chute, with a red plastic fokker triplane attached on top. The player who was the Red Baron dropped marbles down the shoot. He had (IIRC) black and white marbles. The goal for Snoopy was to catch the white marble, but not the black marbles, by opening and closing the lid at the right time. The red baron tried to drop the marbles in such a pattern as to fool Snoopy.

I remember "Red Baron", absolutely great game.

However, I also remember my disappointment about it's successor

You could fly for both sides in Red Baron.
