    What does "characterization" mean in this context?

    Our early analysis used DAE molecules, because they are easier to characterize; their ligation leads to a reporter strand through which it is possible to characterize the products conveniently.

    Well, it'll be in OT soon enough. To answer your question, in general terms, it means easier to accurately describe the contents of something - ie, the composition of the molecule or its products when ligated (the pieces of the molecule).
