  • Athlon 64 crashes SMAC

So this is a bad situation, Alpha Centauri (actually Alien Crossfire refuses to run on the new Athlon 64 game box, so someone is really really upset.

When I tried to run the program, it comes up with a box saying something to the effect of "You are using an unsupported processor but you can try to run the game anyway."

So I clicked "OK" and it just died. Nothing.

Does anybody know a patch or a workaround? Thanks.

Perhaps a workaround could be an emulator? Essentially dosbox, but for windows?

I get that almost every time I load up the game (ever since I've been playing it on WinXP), but it runs fine.

There is a patch out there somewhere that makes SMAX run fine on XP; if you don't have that, someone on the SMAC forums may be able to point you in the right direction...

Also, you may want to try changing the ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm line in the alphacentarui.ini file from 1 to 0 (or 0 to 1), I've heard that that works for some people. But you might have more experienced people help you on the AC forums, of course.

It's not XP. My version was working fine under XP - try using a no CD crack.

              I don't have an Athalon 64, sorry. .

I have an older Athalon, I have no problems.

but you should post this in the SMAC forum. There are some patches (like the windows patch), or possibly a line in the .ini file that might fix things.

It is a shame as I got a 64 at Christmas and all former and current games have run like a charm..

                sorry

I did read where some drivers were having conflicts with the 64 just a thought

I am wishing you well to resolve this soon

                    There is a SMAC forum?

Isn't there a flag for switching to "old voxel" algorithm or something that improves compatibility?

                        Yeah, that fixed this problem.

Another one cropped up - I am in the middle of a game, and it just hangs. Fortunately I can shut it down by bringing up the task manager, but why the heck does it hang? I tried running it in Windows 98 compatibility mode - no joy.

I thought someone else had a problem with the game hanging. check the recent threads over on those forums. It should be on the last 3 pages or so. It wasn't that long ago I saw a thread on it. I'm not sure if they ever solved the problem though.

It might very well be XP really. I have two comps, both with XP. One won't run SMAC, the other will.
