  • Well I agree with Snoopy, I don't like a four letter word with an S tacked on the end to get around the rule. Your above word (5 letters plus an S) seems fine to me, but I don't think you want a radii answer, so given the absolute choice of yes or no........I would vote against plurals.

    and for Joncha.........T

Ok, so what is my last word (knocks)? Is it plural or third person present? Is it allowed if plurals are not?

Why do you people want to spoil the fun for everybody by introducing more rules?

        • I think my rule is more precise, actually, not less so - the point of the length rule is 5 letter long words, so specifying that words must be 5 letters long before modifications (ie pluralizing slash verb tensing). And rules are there to avoid fun being spoilt.

English is my first language and I have no idea what "third person present" is (I barely passed high school english ).

In my opinion any word that ends with s that is a word without the s added on (knock) is a plural (and I am certain someone is going to give an example of a word that ends in s that makes an entirely different word without the s ).

Actually I didn't plan to vote on this, you requested (twice) that I vote so I finally gave my opinion. I would prefer it be an unwritten rule, that plurals are fine if more then 5 letters, that they be an abuse of the current rules if simply a 4 letter word plus an s.

It seems that the ambiguity of the situation requires additional rules to clarify.

I beleive that if we allow 4 letter plurals, that I could not only come up with a series of words (4 letters plus an s) that would stump the guessers and allow me to considerably catch up in the standings but that I could even give you the last s before the guesses start and still stump the guessers. I am not interested in that however, but I think a number of the "experts" of Hangman could easily do the same, and that would kill the game quicker than too many rules would.

                      • On plurals the general feeling is clear here. People do not like 4 letter words with an S on the end (which was my rationale for suggesting the change). As Ljube correctly points out this applies to the verbs in third person also.

Longer words with S on the end (for either reason) are not really the issue - knocks is easier to guess than knock, after all.

Ljube: I think you are wrong on it 'spoiling' the game to introduce a new rule - it is necessary to prevent abuse in the same way the 5 letter minimum rule is. If you are going to allow the word setter a point for stumping the group you need rules governing what is acceptable and what is not.

To Sparrow: I agree. FG experience (hangman and generally) has shown that, whilst it would be nice for the game to be governed by unwritten rules, there are always people who, through sheer pigheadedness, will try and circumvent them and then hide behind the fact it's not disallowed in the rules. It is also true that new players will not be aware of unwritten rules.

Overall, disallowing five letter words when they are plurals of 4 letter words or a 4 letter verb with a S on the end seems prudent - anything more restrictive is arguably overkill.

Guys, not too many rules ok.
Not that I dissagree with what you said to Sparrow though.
