  • The Return to Castle Wolfenstein...

Bought it some time ago and decided to try it out yesterday.

After choosing the difficulty level the game crashes...

Once I was kicked back to the desktop, some other times the screen just went black (I could still move the cursor though)...

My system is: CPU Pentium III 550 Mhz, 384 MB RAM, NVIDIA 32 MB graphics' card, 120 GB hard drive, Windows 98 SE (which I know people hate, but until now I've never experienced any problems). I know this is low end, but I run MOHAA, Deus Ex, and Half-Life without any problems...

I browsed the game's website... There's about a zillion different patches... Is the bug described above a common one and which patches do I need?

    Thanks!

What?! That's not what I've heard?

Why is the good doctor not fond of it?

It's great MP, which is probably why you've heard people enthuse about it. The x-pack was free too and popular.

        The SP game is lacklustre.

even if the SP game is "lacklustre", it doesn't mean that the game sucks... i found it to be a very decent SP game - good level designs (some more than others) and some interesting boss battles.
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

Horses for courses. I found it dull almost all of the way through.

I thought the difficulty was very variable (in a bad way, particularly the boss battles), but otherwise I had fun with the SP game - it was interestingly varied. Not good enough that I've gone back to play it again since I completed it, though.

The single player was good, but not fantastic; the multiplayer, and the standalone Enemy Territory, is very fun - especially with the Lieutenant's abilities to call in airstrikes and mortars.
