  • Rainbow Six:Raven Shield and Splinter Cell:Chaos Theory?

On Saturday, I went out and bought those two games. I am really loving them. I bought both because they are different types of FPS. Raven Shield is squad based and requires good advanced planning whereas Splinter cell requires a lot of stealth.

I am loving both. They are both excellent shooters. Although I would probably rate Splinter Cell better. The graphics are better and there are more strategies for how to deal with a situation. Raven Shield does suffer from the occasional bad team AI where you open a door and your AI team members don't move through it like they should and get shot. Raven shield does have an annoying bug that sometimes in the briefing room the mouse arrow will dissapear when you try to select a button to advance to the next screen. It's like the mouse arrow goes behind the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

Is anyone else playing these games? What are your thoughts?
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

I will probably get Splinter Cell: chaos theory. It looks amazing.

It is amazing. the graphics are extremelly good and the game mechanics are great. It's not like other shooters where your strategies are basically run/walk/crouch/shoot. In Splinter cell, you can hang upside down from an overhead pipe and snap the bad guy's neck as he walks right under you. You can pick up objects and throw it to decoy an enemy. You can grab a bad guy from behind and use him as a human shield. You have cool toys like a sticky camera. Basically, you shoot the sticky camera which will attach to a wall and then you can remotely see what the camera sees. It's a great way to look around a corner and spy on the bad guys without revealing yourself. Stealth is key. You have a light meter and a sound meter that tell you how visible and how loud your character is. You can shoot out lights to darken an area to help your character hide in the shadows.

There are just a lot of things your character can do other than shooting. That's what makes the game really good in my opinion.

I know, I played the first two. But now Ubisoft Montreal fixed what was problematic with the two other games, things like linearity for example. And they overhauled the graphics engine. And the new coop mode looks like a lot of fun!

I won a copy of the Splinter Cell: chaos theory soundtrack. The maestro, Amon Tobin, even signed it!

Also look at the Thief series (all 3 of them) if you like this sort of thing ... Thief pioneered a lot of that stuff, before the first splinter cell came out

The last one doesn't seem to be very good.

Another thing I noticed about Splinter Cell is that you really have to use your ammo wisely cause you don't get a lot. In the first mission of Chaos Theory, I got all the way to the end but could not end the mission because I was out of ammo and you are suppose to shoot out the light in the lighthouse to signal your retrieval. So, if you can sneak up on an enemy and knife them, do it, cause any way to conserve ammo is good.

I am still figuring out Raven Shield. I tend to make a lot of dumb mistakes. I don't use frag grenades, flash grenades, smoke grenades and tear gas grenades as often as I should. I tend to just barge into a room which usually gets me and/or my team killed. But if I had opened the door and tossed a flash grenade in before the assault, my team would have cleared the room with no problem. I also found that movement is key, especially in open spaces. If you stay in one spot too long, there is a good chance the bad guys will bring in reinforcements and converge on your location and you'll get wiped out.
