Yes, it would be a good thing. They probably can improve things quite a bit. But I doubt PC gaming will become as painless and effortless as console gaming. One reason why is that Xbox consoles, for example, all have the same hardware.

that would seem to be the logical direction for PC gaming to go and one tht all parties with a stake in PC gaming would have an incentive to follow.
Co-ordination problems abound in reality, alas.

So why doesn't it sound like a must have item to me? I've got an xbox and quite like it really, but after my initial purchase(and games thereafter) i dont have to have any dealing with microsoft - no monthly subsciption(yet another no-live happy xbox user) or need for on-line infastructure.

I opperate very happily in my own xbox bubble, free from all the online 'woot'ery and hormones, prefering decent games over bragging rights. So i guess i'll be sticking with the origional unless i can run xbox2 without an umbilical cord to microsoft central.

MP is the future, but I don't think any company will want to alienate the SP customer base. I wouldn't worry CoT.

Progress must be in the eye of the beholder, well the prospective microsoft customer anyway

I've played live(at a friends), and frankly i wasn't impressed. Mostly it has to do with the games i like to play(strat/rpg mostly). So for me mp as it stands just doesn't hold much interest.

All i'm saying is that if xbox2 is aiming at MP/on-line only, then i'm not interested as a gamer, as currently the types of games this often favours is not my cup of tea.

Still i'm sure microsoft has a master plan, and i'm(and others like me) most likely not a factor in it, which is fine with me

I speak for about 95% of the market, at which point a plurality becomes reasonable.
Wait, Xbox having 95% market share? Since when?

Was referring to buying Microsoft products.

As of now though, there's still a plurality buying MS products.

Xbox is outselling PS2 these days, and there's even an Xbox shortage.

It wont die for ages though, even when better consoles are released.

                                backwards compatability?

Its not a cheap option making a console game, everything has to be 3D to succed(as its expected for the most part) - that means +20 person teams of graphic artists etc.
Now if microsoft doesn't push the developers to carry on with xbox, they most likely will opt to put all their resources into xbox2, atleast i would.

Anyway this is all hypothetical as i don't know any of this for sure, just mulling through some possibles
