Looks like its been polished up quite a bit since it got dropped as Imperium Galactica III. 18 months more development time seems to have been well spent if it plays as well as it looks.

Oh, it plays very good in my opinion. But or there are a lot of people with pirate copies on the forum or ones system specs must be pretty mainstream for there are quite a bit of people with troubles (initially) running the game.

Keep in mind that it is NOT an RTS anymore, it is strictly mission based (I suppose you know a bit of the discussion between original publisher and developper?). OTOH, the community is starting to get missions done and a few homemade tools are getting around next to the ones delivered with the retail.

or the Patrician games(2 or 3)? maybe even more like an elite game? Its all tradeing-upgrade ship etc, i think its the kind of game Sid would have liked Pirates to be, if the hardware was upto it at the time

        And Hueij,

yep when i saw Elite on the BBC my friend had, it really did blow you away. I was always very jelous as i never owned a home computer that could run Elite untill my Amiga and then Frontier came out.

I've only just discovered FFE for the first time recently, sometimes being behind the times has its advantages

I've been playing this all day, its awesome.

A bit linear, perhaps, but the ways the game plays and looks are both SOOOOO smooth. The load-out choices have a big effect on tactics, the voice actors are all Scottish for some reason and the whole thing is pretty cool.

I just found out you can set the camera to follow individual fighters on a tight zoom. Wheeeeeeee!

Why do they make me use Internet Explorer which doesn't even manage to submit a post without losing it ?

Anyway, try the Privateer remake on top of Vega Strike. Releases of both of these games are rather sporadic, which is a shame because both are being developed actively... if you can deal with CVS and want to try out Vega Strike, I recommend looking at http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/ph...wtoCheckoutCvs - there's a win32 build of the game's binaries in the data4.x module.

Yeah - its my one gripe about the Imperium Galactica games. I played 1+2 intensively many years back. Loved them both, really fun games to play - just a shame you always felt a little 'rail-roaded'. I'll have a look at this new version though, once my specs are upto it

I knew when I saw Muxec's name as the last poster, Space Rangers was going to be mentioned. I swear, he must've made the damn game or something.

Anyways, I didn't think space rangers was an "elite" type of game at all... from everything I've seen it looks more like an arcade game.

Its really NOTHING like the IG games at all. No base building, no research... hell, no Imperium to control! You manage a small fleet of ships in detailed, beautiful and magnificent space combat. The engine is awesome.

OK, the game only does one thing, but it does it with true style.

It needs a sequel where you get to build fleets and stations and research stuff (i.e. Space : Total War)

Have you tried X2: The threat, Jamski? You can build and manage space stations (that produce goods) and battle fleets. Of course, it takes a while to get to that point since you start off with nothign but a scout ship.

Well, the good news is that the game is quite moddable... even building things can be implemented so the developpers claimed.

But it needs someone to start on that. Sofar the most successfull mod seems to be a Star Trek one.

There's got to be a star trek mod for every single game in existance.

                              Blasphemy!!

@General Ludd, how differernt is X2 compared to the first game in the series?
I picked up X and its expansion pack 'Beyond the frontier'(or something like that) last week, and played about 5-6hrs so far - i'm finding it a little unsatisfying? Did they change stuff in X2 to make it more enjoyable?

I'm still going to keep going with X when i find the time - i'm sure it must pick up and get better as you get used to it. Well i hope so anyway.

                                I didn't play the first, so I couldn't say.

I could see how X2 could be unsatisfying, though - a great deal of the game can be flying from one station to the other with a transport ship hauling goods. But there is also a storyline that you can follow, pirates and aliens to evade, and the promise of eventually buying your own stations with automated transport ships to sell goods, and such.
