Well, the file I got works... ok I haven't actually installed it yet, but I've extracted the installation file, and when I try to run it, it says welcome to the installation of GTA2 bla bla bla

As I noted in my opening post, Rockstar updated the game to work with modern PCs. They're not giving any guarantees (which wasn't to be expected, for a free download ), but it works sweet on my (WinXP SP2) system

The definition of classic usually depends on one's own age. So your age is showing

Anyway, it's definitely not current anymore: it's 4 years old and there've been 3 sequels...

          1) Noone's forcing you to give actually give accurate information
          2) It will download just fine, but as I said the server is very busy. Pick the right time to download it (I got it noonish (CET) on a monday, seems to me European morning/early afternoon is the perfect time to get it).

Ahh, good to see it's up now, the info I had found was a bit outdated, saying it wasn't there two weeks ago.

I downloaded it two weeks ago. It didn't occur to me to post the info here until a few days ago, but I had already downloaded the game around New Year.

Is the original GTA available free from Rockstar though? Would that give enough of an idea of the series to begin discussing it? I might do so, just to see what its all about.

I think its available. IMO the first two games are different animals to the later ones. The general things that make the games enjoyable are the same(doing missions, exploring, randomly killing people etc) but the graphics are very cartoony. I seem to remember objection to the violence in the earlier games, but its only when the graphics become realistic from GTA3 onwards that I think you will get the full visceral/offensive/child mind warping effect

Yep, the first GTA is also avaliable for free (same link as in OP), though GTA2 is the best GTA game I'd say... I haven't been able to get the first GTA to run in WinXP (too fast), but maybe others have been more lucky

There's a huge difference between GTA/GTA2 and GTA3+ though. While GTA2 is trying to put in a lot of comedy, GTA3+ is trying to be more realistic (in the story)

Have you played any of the GTA games before?

No, im not much of a fan of either shooters or driving games. But im willing to give such a popular series a chance. Though its not on my short list of ways to use my gaming time now, since its (legally) free I may try it, when time allows.

Ive been thinking about the GTA series today, and I think a lot of the violence in it is down to what the player wants to get out of the game. I think if I looked at a GTA game as a 'city simulator' then it is totally down to me if I want to run over people and stuff.

I tried playing GTA2 lawfully as it were, and Ive got to say its pretty damn dull I ran over one guy by accident when he was hiding under a bridge, and some of the pedestrians are like lemmings.

I think if the peneltys for breaking the law were harsher then I might pay more attention to them. I think at the end of the day any '1st/3rd person perspective city simulator' is going to get bogged down in violence, because thats what players want out of it.

Also I dont think there is much to do in the game if you dont want to kill people, be it through the missions or kill frenzys. I guess I could still do all the gangster missions just so I had something to do, but try to be as lawful as I could be outside of the missions.

I think playing lawfully would be easier and more rewarding in GTA4. Ive not played GTA5 yet, would playing GTA5 lawfully work?

Back to GTA2 for a sec, has anyone got the multiplayer network games working? I dont know if Im going to have to find a GTA2 forum to swap IPs to set up games or what. I remember playing GTA1 multiplayer against my brothers at home. Both the frag matchs and race ones were fantastic

At this point there's not much we know about GTA4... wont be released for at least a couple of years... and GTA5 is even father away

Or are you refering to Vice City as GTA4 and San Andreas as GTA5?

Yep, I thats what I was thinking I realize now that I have never really played GTA2 before, although I played GTA1 and GTA London into the ground. The one I think of GTA3, the first one that had better graphics I dont remember its name though
