  • Historical accuracy in Sid Meier's Pirates?

    Evening, slags.

I'm toying with the idea of trying out Sidney's watery opus, but being stickler for historical accuracy there's something I need to know. Is there much man-on-man action in it?

After all, those bluff jack tars on the Spanish Main (all burly lads, with hands like plates) tended to take the sort of approach with each other's chutney gutters that rats take with drainpipes, and it would be the very worst sort of bowdlerisation to omit this crucial detail. So does Roger the Cabinboy make an appearance, or what? If they ain't bumming, I ain't buying.

Your helpful advices, as ever, would be appreciated, and I shower down my love and affection upon your well-scrubbed and upturned faces.

    Gimp.

Is this meant to be a joke? The game carries an ESRB rating of "E", so there's no blood, no language, and certainly no gay subtext.

I knew it! What a sell-out. It's as bad as his convenient overlooking (in Civ) of the fact that the Colossus of Rhodes sported a 25-foot long bronze knob-on.

I'm at a loss for words.

I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

On a more serious note, Sid said numerous times in interviews that he wanted the game to be cartoonish and funny. This puppy would have been much better IMO in the hands of the Fallout team.

Why would you make a game about pirates cartoonish and funny?
"Bother," said Pooh, "Eeyore, ready two photon torpedoes and lock
phasers on the Heffalump. Piglet, meet me in transporter room
three. Christopher Robin, you have the bridge."

So you can sell it as light entertainment.

. . . and get a whole bunch of players to "remember it fondly" eight years hence, when its time to remake it again.

does this mean we're going to have another remake of Pirates eight years from now?
