Have any of you heard of this game before? I ask because funcom has now gone insane and is giving the software away plus they're letting you use their online game servers for a year without paying. The only condition is that you sign up before Jan 15, 2005 and you give them a credit card number (which won't be charged).

I spoke to a friend who said Anarchy Online sucked but if it's free it might be worth checking out.

The other condition is that you don't get any of the expansion packs. (and if you upgrade during your free year, you have to start paying the monthly fee) I'm told by some that the game isn't worth playing without the expansion packs, and by others that the expansion packs aren't that good anyways - but there is no denying that not having them will prevent access to half the game world, which most other people have access to, and that can be a real damper on the social aspect of your game experience.


As for the game itself, I played it a bit during the Beta and never really got into it. Couldn't really say one way or the other, but maybe I'll take advantage of this and give it another whirl. The sci-fi setting can be a bit refreshing.

I played a lot (a whole lot) for a couple of months in uly, August, and September, than decided that I would rather spend my time donig soething sort of new (so started EQ2)

IMO even without the expansions (which many hate anyway) it completely trashes other free MMORPGs.

Well, I made use of the offer and am playing it now. It's better than I remembered... but I have yet to really get into it.

I've been playing AO and I am enjoying it. I'm still noob as they say although ha.

My martial artist got off the island and now is on the mainland. However last night as I was working on my fixer on the noob island, I learned all about nano packets (doh!).

The person I spoke with was kind of vague so I thought I'd try here... will my martial artist be able to obtain same NCUs on the mainland that was available on the noob island?

I just might reroll that one anyway due to poor placements of IPs.

As for armor I'm still confused on how armor work in AO. This person I partied with told me that the best thing to do is to buy all newcomer armor then upgrade those. Does this mean I can basically comply a set of armor and just keep on upgrading those everytime I level?

How do I determine which armor is best for my class and race?

NCUs?

you can't obtain them on the island, you can obtain the same nanos on the island as on the mainland

the only things that the island has speical is some armor, some weapons (all NOOB) and a couple of nice items you can't find elsewhere (range meter and omni tradeskilling device)

and be very careful about your IPs.. just use them for the most useful stats (most classes run a little short..)

a lot of people's first chracters have odd IP placement though.. that is expected

for class armor is really complicated, because every class wants something different

newcomer armor only upgrades to something that you can put on at level 15... so it shortly becomes unsuseful, I only bothered with it for one of my recent characters

race only effects armor based upon what is easy to get on, Atrox has an easy time getting on Str/Sta based armor, Opi has an easy time getting on Sen/Agi based armor, Nanomage (The gimpest race by far) has an easy time getting on Int\Psy armor, and Solitus has an equal time getting on every armor

notice that the most nano buffs from other classes exist for Str, then Sta, then agility, then int/psy and last is sense

oh, sense decemeber I have started 2 or so new characters.. and have played a lot at times.. (even doing some 18ish hours straight)

so I can still be found playing at times.. this has been the MMORPG that I play the most

oh, on classes and armor

it is very complicated... generally you want armor that buffs your prime stats

so if you are a soldier, you will want armor that buffs Assault Rifle, and Burst, and Full Auto

damage will also be an important thing to buff..

while an NT will not care about any of those things

an NT would want armor that buffs Nano Init, Nano Pool, and stuff like that

there are 3 major defenses...
Absorbs
Evades
HP

and you generally want to max the one your class is good in, if your class is good with evades (this means has perks or nanos that boost evades, like acrobat or careful in battle) than you will want armor that boosts evades, if your class is good with absorbs (like having biocacoon or TMS) then AC might be good (however, note that the effects of nanos and perks are much stronger than AC, and so most people don't consider AC that important), if your class is good at HP (Soldiers, Enforcers, and Keepers that I know of) then you might want to focus on maxing that.. and being an Atrox (who has by far themost HP)

this is just a simple rundown.. it gets a lot more complicated (like almost every class can get good Evades.. so a lot of people work at that so that they have Evades as well as absorbs and HP)
