Everyone of the games mentioned are great games in my book, except the CTP ones. I did not like either CTP or CTP2 out of the box. I keep hearing about the mods to CTP2, but I could not see the need to check it out.

Civ2/3 Homm2 Moo1/2 Smac are all games I spent years playing and still play Homm2 and Moo1/2 and of course CivIII.

              TBS that I have played:

              Civ1, Civ2, Civ3
              SMAC, Alien Crossfire
              CtP1
              Colonization
Star Trek: Birth of the Federation
              Galactic Civilizations

The only ones I currently play are C3 and GC, and of those I would say GC is the best.

As for extreme nostalgia, I would say Colonization is the best.

Right now I think I will surprize myself and say my all time favorite TBS is Galactic Civilizations.

And TBS is definitely my favorite genre. C3 and GC are the only computer games of any kind I currently play.

IIRC Gamespy (is that right?) selected FFT as number one for a game you can play again and again, something like that.

MoM is that way too, that's why I love them both. Unfortuantely FFT is on the PS and I don't really play with that thing any more.

Civ1 begun it all, but my vote would go to SMAC/SMAX. Amazingly complex, atmospheric, with also a great story... great. Downsides: AI couldn't handle the complexity and the graphics were really ugly. But it's an excellent game overall. Pure awesome.

I would probably put CtP2 there, if it actually worked. It's conceptually the best TBS IMO, but it has never been seen in full power - each aspect was either unbalanced or didn't work.

A tide between homm2,3, civ2, and smac. Why?

homm2: best music, graphic, and a gameplay so easy (yet sophisticated enough for people like us to enjoy) to even convert tbs haters, unless that person really hates fantasy theme (or should i say fairly tale theme?).

homm3: incrediblibly accessible map editor and a great balanced between 8 very different races; and since it does not take a day to finish a game, = the greatest pc tbs multiplayer ever and a very refined game.

                      civ 2: no explanation needed

smac: As a guy who would never pay to see the latest Star War movie and has to be PAID to watch any Star Strek movie, this game is amazing even if it is a "sci-fi". The perfect continuation of Civ2; its adds so many things that turns out to be great, but these additions made smac a less refined game than civ2, which is game that also has many probs in details.

Atm i play magic online, an mmog, tbs, and u can earn 1 dollar profit every 2-3 hour you play thru trade, but you need to invest 500 dollars to start xp.

wrt definition - Im very sympathetic to the idea that there are "strategy games" which include games like EU, city builders, etc and "RTS" which does NOT mean all strat games in real time, but a specific genre with certain charecteristics common to the warcraft and C&C clones, etc.

But for this I really wanted to focus on TBS classicaly defined, which I think are somewhat more similar in gameplay, in particular.

I will count the votes later.

I do note the dominance of opinion for SMAC.

I can understand that sentiment, given the way it takes the strategic possibilities of Civ2, and expands them with SE, ship design, the terraforming system, etc.

OTOH, it seems to me that SMAC is the kind of game you have to play a LOT to really get the benefits of - I played through about 2 or 3 times and I was only starting to get the hang of the terraforming possibilities, and of the SE possibilities. And really none of the ship design possibilities (and i had been a pretty experienced Civ 2 player, though only in SP) To break through to the place where you really appreciate the whole game, you have to like the story, factions, atmosphere enough to keep slogging through, or else you have to be so sophisticated a TBS player you pick it all up right away. Im not that sophisticated, and the SMAC atmosphere, factions, backstory werent engaging enough for me to stick with it that far.

So for me, with the limited games ive experienced Civ2 is still the best TBS. And Imp2 is the second best, and THEN SMAC. And PG2 not far behind, and Im taking a liking to Moo2.
