Since Half Life 2 is almost out, maybe it's time I tried Half Life

OK,I want to know something. How is it, that if I stay up, there's only 2 (count them, Two) headcrabs that drop out of the vent, but when I slid down the side, there must have been 20 dropping down the elevator shaft?

I mean, just where do they come from?

1.1.1.0 is the latest you can get from Web. Google for it. There's also a newer update, but that's only from Steam... so it's only available if you still have a CD key for HL, and if you want to use that terrible service that Steam is (OK, HL2 forces you to use Steam to install anyway).

Ok, so I did a search for patches, and found a all in one patch.

82 MEGABYTES!!!!!!!!!!

I only have dial up.

so I put in the 1.1.0.9 patch from the disc and maybe I'll download the 1.1.0.9 to 1.1.1.0 patch (still 12 MB!) at some point.

is there any real advantage to the patches, the readme seems to update multiplayer for the most part.

I cheat on that part because it's so annoying. You can "slide down" on the right side of the elevator.

No idea really. MP exists through Steam only now anyway, so maybe 1.0.0.9 will do you fine.

And what's so hard about that elevator part, honestly? I just keep moving there, shooting crabs... not a hard moment at all.

I haven't finished it yet. I'm in the part called "Blast Pit" . I'm relying a lot on the walkthrough.

Dont bother with the patches for HL unless youre playing Counter-strike or other mod or MP.

Remember, it's 10 days now (under 240 hours) till release of HL2. So your time to finish it is limited. I think it took me about a week the first time I played - now I can finish it in 2 days. Ehh.

It's good to know that you still have the best part of the game ahead.

Errr... Not really. I have a athlon 800 withe a 16MB tnt2 videocard. it will be quite some time before I look at HL2

ok, so I got back to Half Life after almost a week, going around the blast pit area.

I have decided I can only play this game for about an hour at a time. Otherwise I'll go to bed and wake up to the sound of a headcrab scream. This game can get Freaky.

No more so (so far) than dealing with those horrible things coming out of the pit. I have long since lost count of how many times I have died and reloaded after getting pecked by those things. I estimate it's about 50 so far.

The walkthrough gave me the idea for using grenades to distract them momentarily, but I'm back after turning on the fuel and oxygen and got the power on, but now I have tomake it back up to the top, and I Have No Grenades.

I'm hoping I can just be real quiet. I have made it to the second level by taking a single step during the banging, then waiting until they start banging again and taking another single step. I save every several steps. I couldn't believe it when I made it up the first ladder, but I was totally freaked and shut the computer down.

Then I played some Dink Smallwood to unwind.

Err, you are probably running like mad. Just hold down crouch, and they won't be able to hear you.

Sure enough, another method to do it is very fast, that's how I prefer it now. To go down initially, I take the shotgun, run and jump down full speed, using the shotgun to blast through the wood. To go back after that, I run and jump, also throwing a grenade at some point - if you're fast enough, they can't get you either.

Yeah grenades are the key. If yoiu run out there are more available around the level. Just bung the grenade past the door and leg it to the door.
